Fact-checking what happened at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Almost as soon as gunshots were reported from the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night, social media was flooded with conspiracy theories and finger-pointing over the attack. In a now-common phenomenon after such incidents, prominent influencers fill the information vacuum with speculation in a bid for attention and followers.

The miasma of falsehoods, rumors and conjecture has clouded multiple breaking news moments in recent years, including two previous assassination attempts against President Trump and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, then Venezuela’s president.

This time, users from across the political spectrum were participating in the chaos on platforms like X, Facebook and TikTok. Some users claimed that the attack was “staged,” suggesting without evidence that it was part of an apparent plot by Mr. Trump or others to distract from bad polling numbers or the war with Iran. The term “staged” surged to more than 300,000 posts on X by midday Sunday, according to data by TweetBinder, a social media analytics company owned by Audiense. (At least some of those posts refuted the notion that the attack was planned.)

During an NHL game, Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals had an unusual moment when his hockey stick got jammed in the safety glass panel near the bench. Unable to pull it free in time, he rushed off to grab a replacement so play could continue. Meanwhile, a nearby fan, Caroline McCain, stepped in to help by striking the stuck stick against the panel—using her expensive iPhone to knock it loose.

After the game, McCain joked in an interview that she chose to use her phone instead of her drink because she “couldn’t sacrifice her beer.” When Wilson later learned what she had done to help him, he showed his appreciation by buying her a brand-new phone to replace the one she used during the moment.

In a clever moment from MrBeast’s Squid Game–style challenge video. During the explanation of the rules, Jimmy said the phrase “in this game of red light green light.” One contestant interpreted this literally: since the words “green light” were spoken, he assumed movement was technically allowed at that exact moment—even though the game hadn’t officially started yet.

So while everyone else stayed still, thinking it was still “red light,” that contestant moved forward without stopping. Because he hadn’t violated the literal wording of the rules, he wasn’t eliminated and ended up becoming the first finisher. It’s a classic example of someone exploiting a loophole by paying close attention to wording rather than just following the crowd.

LIVE: Trump evacuated from White House Correspondents' Dinner

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday after a gunman rushed a Secret Service checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton, officials said.

At approximately 8:36 p.m., a single suspect armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives charged into the hotel lobby area and attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint, according to law enforcement. He was intercepted immediately by Secret Service agents, and gunfire was exchanged.

The Rookie is an American police procedural television series created by Alexi Hawley for ABC. They ask him if he has anything illegal in his car. He knew he had nothing illegal, so he consented to the search. They search his vehicle and they find his perfectly legal IBS medication that is prescribed to him. Despite having all legitimate markings, the officers claimed it was fentanyl - or maybe cocaine (they didn’t know), but they really wanted to arrest and charge him anyway. It would take Brian 1 year, 4 months and 28 days from the date of his arrest, to clear his name. And at no point during that period of time was Brian ever in possession of any illegal controlled substances.
