Justin Jefferson didn’t invent the Griddy, but he helped turn it into one of the most famous touchdown celebrations in sports history. Growing up in Louisiana and later starring for LSU Football, Jefferson was introduced to the dance created by Allen “Griddy” Davis after his LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase helped bring it into the Tigers locker room. Jefferson’s mom had told him that when he scored touchdowns he needed to give the fans a little more entertainment, so Jefferson made the Griddy part of his celebration and started hitting it on the national stage during LSU’s legendary 2019 National Championship season alongside Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase. Then the Minnesota Vikings selected Justin Jefferson with the No. 22 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and when JJ scored his first NFL touchdown against the Tennessee Titans, he hit the Griddy before he even crossed the goal line. That moment helped send the celebration into another stratosphere. Soon NFL players, NBA stars, athletes, celebrities and fans everywhere were hitting the Griddy, while the dance exploded across TikTok, social media and even Fortnite. But Jefferson became much bigger than his celebration. The Vikings superstar quickly established himself as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, breaking rookie records, becoming the 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 128 receptions and 1,809 receiving yards, producing the iconic one-handed fourth-down catch against the Buffalo Bills, earning multiple All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, and becoming the face of Minnesota football. Through six NFL seasons, Justin Jefferson has already recorded 579 receptions, 8,480 receiving yards and 42 receiving touchdowns.
