LIVE: Trump evacuated from White House Correspondents' Dinner

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday after a gunman rushed a Secret Service checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton, officials said.

At approximately 8:36 p.m., a single suspect armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives charged into the hotel lobby area and attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint, according to law enforcement. He was intercepted immediately by Secret Service agents, and gunfire was exchanged.

BREAKING NEWS: President Donald Trump on Saturday night praised the "incredible" response of Secret Service and law enforcement after a gunman armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach security at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, calling the swift action a testament to the courage protecting the nation.

Speaking shortly after being evacuated from the Washington Hilton, Trump described the dramatic scene as both dangerous and, in an unexpected way, unifying.

"A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service," Trump said at the White House. "They acted very quickly."

🚨 Assassin FIRES On Trump, Panic in DC..

President Donald Trump was swiftly escorted off stage by Secret Service after shots were fired at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, on Saturday. 

Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet members are all safe, sources said. 

Authorities have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California, three sources told CNN. He will be charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said. 

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins describes the scene inside the dinner as Trump was rushed from the stage. CNN’s Manu Raju, Brian Stelter and Jake Tapper also detail what they saw.

A shooter opened fire inside the hotel where Trump was attending the White House Correspondents' dinner, according to a law enforcement official.

President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and top leaders of the United States were evacuated from the annual dinner and were reportedly ok.

There did not immediately appear to be any injuries. The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the banquet hall as guests ducked under tables by the hundreds.

A U.S. special forces soldier involved in the military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been charged with using classified information about the mission to win more than $400,000 in an online betting market, federal officials announced Thursday.

Gannon Ken Van Dyke was part of the operation to capture Maduro in January and used his access to classified information to make money on the prediction market site Polymarket, the federal prosecutor’s office in New York said.

He has been charged by the Justice Department with unlawful use of confidential government information for personal gain, theft of nonpublic government information, commodities fraud, wire fraud and making an unlawful monetary transaction. He could face years in prison.

Van Dyke, 38, was involved in the planning and execution of capturing Maduro for about a month beginning Dec. 8, 2025, according to the federal prosecutor’s office. Even though he signed nondisclosure agreements promising to not divulge “any classified or sensitive information” related to the operations, prosecutors say the Army soldier used this information to make a series of bets related to Maduro being out of power by Jan. 31, 2026.

During the explanation of the rules, Jimmy said the phrase “in this game of red light green light.” One contestant interpreted this literally: since the words “green light” were spoken, he assumed movement was technically allowed at that exact moment—even though the game hadn’t officially started yet.

So while everyone else stayed still, thinking it was still “red light,” that contestant moved forward without stopping. Because he hadn’t violated the literal wording of the rules, he wasn’t eliminated and ended up becoming the first finisher. It’s a classic example of someone exploiting a loophole by paying close attention to wording rather than just following the crowd.
