CONTEXT/SUMMARY:
On Jul. 2, 2023, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper working alongside a Florida Highway Patrol trooper stopped an Infiniti G35 traveling on US-90 in Brackettville, Kinney County, TX. Temperatures in the area at the time were well over 100 degrees.

During the roadside interview, troopers discovered that the driver, identified as Edwin Giovanni Barrientos Linares, was an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who was actively smuggling three other migrants. Linares had an expired California driver's license in his possession.

Two of the three migrants were juveniles, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old, who were found concealed inside the trunk of the vehicle in the extreme heat. When asked if he had anything illegal in the car, Linares had denied having any dr*gs, weapons, or contraband of any kind.

Linares was charged with three counts of human smuggling. All three undocumented migrants found in the vehicle were taken into custody by US Border Patrol.

The stop was made under Texas Governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star, a state-led border security initiative that has partnered Texas law enforcement with troopers from other states, including Florida, to combat human and dr*g smuggling along the southern border.
