CONTEXT/SUMMARY:
On May 28, 2023, a large crowd had gathered outside a bar in Toledo, OH. Officers from the Toledo Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol had assembled on scene and were in the process of dispersing the crowd.

Without warning, a 21-year-old woman named Liz crossed the center lane of traffic in her Chevy Silverado and struck police unit 169 head-on with enough force to knock the tire off the patrol vehicle. Officers on foot gave chase as the Silverado came to a stop a short distance away. She was immediately pulled from the truck, visibly distressed. She told officers she had been following a friend back to the west side of Toledo when the crash occurred, and claimed she had been looking at her GPS and did not see the stopped police vehicle.

She admitted to consuming three alcoholic beverages prior to the crash. Fire department personnel were called to the scene to evaluate her for injuries, which she declined. She then completed all three standardized field sobriety tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand. Following the tests, she was placed under arrest for OVI and seated in the back of a patrol vehicle.

Officer Wright read her the Ohio BMV implied consent form and explained her options regarding the breathalyzer. After asking several questions about how taking or refusing the test would affect her license and charges, she chose to decline the breath test. Rather than transporting her to jail, Officer Wright consulted with a supervisor and received approval to issue her a citation and release her directly to her mother, who had arrived on scene. She was charged with Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI) and Failure to Control.

On Sep. 11, 2023, she pled guilty to an amended charge of having Physical Control of a Vehicle Under the Influence. The Failure to Control charge was dismissed. She was fined $100 plus court costs, ordered to attend a 3-day Driver's Intervention Program, and placed on probation for six months.

Apple just introduced the brand new MacBook Neo, a $599 Mac that could become one of the most popular laptops Apple has ever released. I’m in New York City at Apple’s Apple Experience event where I got hands-on time with the MacBook Neo along with the other products announced this week.

The MacBook Neo features a completely new design with color options like silver, blush, citrus, and indigo along with a color-matched keyboard. It also becomes the first Mac powered by an iPhone chip, using the A18 Pro from the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

For $599 you get a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, 500 nits of brightness, Apple Intelligence support, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Apple claims it is up to 50% faster than the bestselling PC with Intel Core Ultra 5 and up to 3x faster for AI workloads.

The MacBook Neo also offers up to 16 hours of battery life, USB-C connectivity, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 6, and a lightweight design that makes it perfect for students and first-time Mac users.

In this video I also briefly recap the rest of Apple’s announcements including the Studio Display XDR with ProMotion, refreshed MacBook Air and iPad Air models, M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros, and updates to the iPhone 17e.

Iran is not asking for ceasefire or negotiations with US, says Araghchi

The first transatlantic fiber-optic cable is being recovered from the ocean floor. 

TAT-8, which went live in 1988, was revolutionary for its time. It was the first to carry data between Europe and the United States using light instead of electrical signals. 

Engineers believed it might be the last cable the world would ever need. It filled to capacity within 18 months. 

Retired in 2002 after developing an unrepairable fault, it has sat on the seabed for over two decades. A small crew is now hauling it up for recycling. 

The operation coincides with Meta's announcement of Project Waterworth, a 50,000 kilometer cable built partly to support AI infrastructure.

TRUMP FIRES KRISTI NOEM

President Donald Trump said Thursday on social media he was pushing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem out of her position and would name Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin to replace her.

Trump thanked Noem for her service, saying in his Truth Social post she “has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!)” and that she “will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere.”

Noem has faced growing scrutiny over her conduct in the position, including her alleged romantic relationship with her chief adviser, distribution of the windfall of cash the department has received — particularly for an expensive ad campaign that showcased her prominently — and her conflicting accounts over fatal incidents involving federal immigration agents.
