In the 2014 war drama Fury, Wardaddy and his tank unit enter a German town and discover people hanging from lampposts with signs accusing them of cowardice for refusing to continue fighting.

The town’s mayor approaches the American soldiers and explains that the remaining defenders want to surrender. They know the war is nearly over and no longer want their town destroyed. Wardaddy orders the soldiers to come outside with their hands raised while his men carefully watch every doorway.

When the doors finally open, the Americans are shocked to discover that most of the defenders are frightened young recruits. They have been forced into uniforms and sent into battle even though Germany’s defeat is already unavoidable.

The soldiers are separated and searched. The mayor then points toward an injured officer and confirms that he was responsible for punishing young people who refused to fight. Wardaddy immediately singles the man out and allows one of his soldiers to deal with him.

The scene shows two very different sides of the collapsing army: young recruits desperate to surrender and an officer who continued enforcing obedience until the final days of the war.

Written and directed by David Ayer, Fury stars Brad Pitt as tank commander Don “Wardaddy” Collier. The film is set during the Allied advance into Germany in April 1945 and was released in the United States on October 17, 2014.

As of August 2026, the film is available in the United States through Hulu, Peacock Premium, Philo, YouTube TV, AMC, and Peacock Premium Plus. It can also be rented or purchased through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home. No free streaming option is currently listed.
