NSW Premier Chris Minns breaks his silence on Anthony Albanese's plan for a public holiday if the Matildas win the World Cup
Not everyone backs the proposal
NSW Premier Chris Minns has backed calls to introduce a national public holiday if the Matildas win the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Mr Minns has supported Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's proposal should the tournament hosts go all the way and lift the trophy on August 20.
The Matildas are one step closer after they cemented a quarter-final berth by beating Denmark 2-0 on Monday night.
The Prime Minister has declared he would make a personal appeal to all state and territory leaders to instate a public holiday should the team win.
Mr Minns told 2GB breakfast Ben Fordham on Tuesday he will propose the idea when National Cabinet meets next week.

'We'd love to back the Matildas with a public holiday, we'll work with the other state and the Commonwealth to get the right date,' the Premier said.
'It's going to be raised at National Cabinet next week.'
'In the meantime, we'll get behind the Matildas for the next two games.'
It comes after the Sydney Opera House was lit up in green and gold in support of the Matildas in their sudden death clash against Denmark on Monday night.

Not all Aussies back the proposal with outspoken commentator Prue Macsween leading the backlash.
'Of course Albo has proposed a public holiday to celebrate the Matildas,' she tweeted on Tuesday.
'He is all about emotion. He doesn't give a stuff about the pressure this will put on small business, the lost productivity hours, the cost of living crisis, the shaky economy and, never good on detail, he overlooks the fact that the final will be played on a Sunday. He is all about the vibe, being seen a hero & cloning Hawke. Irresponsible & typical of this PM poseur.'
Macsween's comments come hours after she slammed Monday's bank public holiday.
New Vaucluse state MP Kellie Sloane has also slammed the proposal which she branded as a 'typical Albo brain explosion.'
'An impromptu public holiday in the middle of a cost of living crisis? Is Labor serious? Economists estimated the last one cost the Aust economy $2b,' she fumed on Twitter.
'Those that hurt most are small businesses. Love the Matildas but this is populist politics at its worst.'

It remains uncertain what day the public holiday would be held as the World Cup final falls on a Sunday.
Questions have also been raised why the same hasn't been proposed for the Australian netball team after the Diamonds won their World Cup over the weekend.
Mr Albanese said the decision will be up state and territory leaders.
'I'll be clearly putting the argument, and I reckon they'll fold like tents. They will go one after the other,' the prime minister told 2DayFM on Monday.
'Because if we can get there, that would be remarkable.'
He first suggested the idea back in June.
'Rest assured – should the Matildas win the World Cup on home soil I reckon there will be a race by Premiers to declare a public holiday,' Mr Albanese declared at the time.
