Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has called for taking collective action to remove barriers related to girls’ education.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day global conference on “Girls’ Education in Muslim Society: Challenges and Opportunities” in Islamabad today.

Expressing concerns over the persistent opposition to girls’ education, the Minister called on the nation to unite in challenging these entrenched societal norms and attitudes.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui stressed that girls’ education is not only a moral imperative but also an economic necessity, highlighting that educated girls are better equipped to care for their families and access better job opportunities.

Highlighting the measures taken by government to improve quality of education, the Minister said that government is pursuing the strategy of teacher's training, construction of new schools, and the provision of scholarships for female students.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui further said that efforts are underway to enhance school infrastructure, particularly in underserved and rural areas, to ensure better educational opportunities for all students.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said new requirements for obtaining passports will serve as a deterrent against beggary and illegal immigration.

Chairing a meeting during his visit to the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports in Islamabad today, he directed to complete all legal formalities regarding the new requirements on priority basis.

He further said 100 percent implementation should be ensured on the directive to block the passports of deported persons. He also inspected the newly installed six Machine Readable Passport and two E-passport machines.

The Interior Minister also met with the German team visiting Pakistan for the installation of the machines. He said that the new machines will enhance the printing capacity of the passport office which will further expedite the issuance of passports for the public.

Director General Passport Mustafa Jamal Qazi gave a detailed briefed that a mobile app will soon be launched for the convenience of citizens.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry was also present on the occasion.

Hyderabad: The makers of HIT 3 have landed in legal trouble after the Madras High Court issued a notice over plagiarism allegations. The court has asked the team, including actor Nani and director Sailesh Kolanu, to file their response by July 7, 2025.

This unexpected development comes after writer Vimalavelan accused the team of copying his story. In his complaint, he stated that he had shared the idea with actor Nani some time ago. Much to his surprise, he later found that HIT 3 had a storyline that closely resembled his concept.

Claiming that the script was used without his knowledge or consent, Vimalavelan moved the court, naming Nani, director Sailesh Kolanu, and the producers as respondents.

With the court now involved, the makers of HIT 3 will have to present their side of the story soon. Whether the issue gets resolved or takes a more serious turn remains to be seen.

New Delhi: An Indian delegation led by Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, will embark on an official visit to Kenya and Madagascar, starting from Monday.

The visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening strategic and defence ties with key African partners in the Indian Ocean region.

In the first leg of the visit, Sanjay Seth will travel to Kenya, where he will participate in the joint unveiling of a Commemorative Pillar in Taita-Taveta County on Monday.

The war memorial honours the fallen soldiers of both India and Kenya, symbolising shared sacrifices and historical ties between the two nations. This event will be a significant milestone in reaffirming the deep-rooted defence cooperation and people-to-people connections.

Following his engagements in Kenya, the Minister will proceed to Madagascar for the second leg of the tour.

On June 26, he is scheduled to attend the celebrations marking the 65th Anniversary of Madagascar’s Independence and the founding of the Malagasy Armed Forces in the capital city of Antananarivo.

His presence at the national event highlights the growing defence and diplomatic relations between India and Madagascar.

The Ministry of Defence, in an official press release, noted:

“India and Kenya are maritime neighbours. The contemporary ties between the two countries are marked by high-level exchanges, robust trade and investment, medical value travel from Kenya, as well as extensive people-to-people contacts. The two nations share a common legacy of struggle against colonialism. Many Indians participated and supported the freedom struggle of Kenya.”

The visit follows formal invitations extended by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and the Minister of Armed Forces of Madagascar.

It is expected to bolster India’s outreach to Africa in line with its maritime security and Indo-Pacific strategic vision, while also deepening bilateral defence cooperation with both nations.

Damascus: A suicide bomber stormed a crowded church in the Syrian capital Damascus during mass, opening fire on worshippers before detonating his explosives, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens more, security sources and a monitoring group said.

The Syrian health authorities put the latest official death toll at 13, with 53 others wounded, Xinhua news agency reported.

The blast ripped through the Mar Elias Church in the Dweilaa district, a predominantly Christian neighbourhood on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, leaving behind blood-stained pews, shattered icons, and scenes of chaos, according to eyewitnesses and local media.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacker opened fire inside the packed church before blowing himself up, causing “severe human losses.” The monitoring group reported that the toll may rise given the critical condition of many of the injured.

Authorities from the interior security department confirmed that the perpetrator was affiliated with the Islamic State (IS). In a statement posted on X, interior chief Hamzah Al-Mustafa condemned the “cowardly terrorist act.” He emphasized that “such acts are contrary to the values of citizenship that bind Syrians together,” and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to national unity, equal citizenship, and defeating criminal groups that threaten public safety.

Emergency responders cordoned off the area as ambulances rushed the wounded to Damascus hospitals. Authorities urged citizens to avoid the vicinity to allow medical teams to operate freely and prevent further casualties amid fears of additional attacks.

Police are hunting for the thief of a violin worth more than £150,000 after it was taken from a member of London's Philharmonia Orchestra.

The high-value instrument was allegedly stolen from The Marquess Tavern on Canonbury Street on the evening of February 18.

CCTV released by the Metropolitan Police appears to show a male suspect wearing a pale beanie hat and light brown coat walking into the pub on his phone.

He then removes his jacket to reveal black clothing underneath, and can be seen carrying a violin-sized black case as he exits the pub and strolls out onto the street.

The historic instrument, understood to be 285-years-old, was made in Florence in 1740.

Its owner David Lopez Ibanez, 30, considers the item 'priceless' and reported the theft to the Met the night it took place.

He said he was visiting the pub with a friend after a rehearsal when his instrument was taken from the bench he was sitting on.

PC Michael Collins, from the Met's local policing team in Camden, said: 'We've been working hard to try and locate the suspect and are releasing this CCTV in an effort to help identify them as soon as possible.

David Lopez Ibañez, a member of the Philharmonia orchestra, was devastated when his 285-year-old violin was stolen while he was sitting in the pub

'The victim, who is a member of London's Philharmonia Orchestra, has told us the piece is worth more than £150,000 and was made in Florence in 1740.

'It is incredibly precious, and for the victim, it's priceless.

'Please help us find the person responsible and have the violin returned it to its rightful owner.'

The Philharmonia is a world-class symphony orchestra for the 21st century, led by Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Located in London at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, the Philharmonia creates classic performances for a global audience, according to its website.

Days after the incident took place, owner Mr Ibanez said: 'You get taught from a very early age to take such good care of it. Nothing prepares you for having it snatched away.'

Three bows were also stolen, including one with a mother-of-pearl tip, as well as a white cotton bag for the instrument made by Mr Ibanez's grandmother.

'It's lived 300 years prior to my hands touching it. It's got its own history,' he said. 'Each hour, each performance, each challenge, you get to know each other more and you express yourself through it.'

On US strikes on Iran's three nuclear facilities, Nayan said that Iran claims it will rebuild all that is lost within two years. The US would then find it difficult to locate the weapons in such a case.

He told ANI, "Iran has anticipated this and they are saying that they have already shifted their critical assets, they still have capabilities in Fordow, and they'll resume their work... They have said that they will rebuild in two years, as Iran claims... But the strike was brutal, and if what Iran is claiming is true, it will be tough for the US to locate where Iran has hidden its capabilities... The US has enough technology, today or tomorrow, it will locate where Iran has kept it."

Earlier in the day, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Sunday confirmed the success of the operation launched by the US in Iran.

In a media briefing with Chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force General Dan Caine, Hegseth said that the US had successfully conducted precision strikes in Iran's Fordow, Isfahan, Natanz.

"Last night, on President Trump's order the US Central Command conducted a precision strike in the middle of the night against three nuclear facilities in Iran- Fordow, Isfahan, Natanz in order to destroy or severely degrade Iran's nuclear program. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs will demonstrate, it was an incredible and overwhelming success," he said. (ANI)

A growing number of grassroots sports clubs claim that staging a large music festival can be a vital source of extra income. Corsham Rugby Club is hosting a family music festival, CorFest, on 21 June, to raise funds. And the first Wiltshire Throwback Festival is being hosted by Melksham Town Football Club and Melksham Rugby Club at Oakfield Stadium from 20-21 June. "From a football club perspective, we're probably talking about the festival making 15 to 20% of our (annual) income," said Melksham Town FC chairman, Adam Young.

"It will be a major bonus to get this in the summer when we don't have as many people coming through the gates." Mr Young said they relied heavily on sponsorship for most of their income and "every penny" counted when running a small club. "It's something that we've wanted to do, we've had a couple of smaller events here in the past, but to have 3,000-5,000 people at the site is incredible," he told BBC Wiltshire.

Melksham Rugby Club chairman, Aaron Brailey, said: "It's for the community, for the rugby club, for the football club, so we're genuinely really excited for it. "It's incredibly difficult as, historically, volunteers have always run the club, but we have aspirations to grow and we've got to take advantage of opportunities like this."

Corsham Rugby Club is hosting CorFest for the third year running on 21 June. The family event raises money for the club, but also local charities, including Dorothy House Hospice and Corsham Food Bank. Chairman, Jim Williams, said: "Being a volunteer-led club, we like to help various local charities and it furthers our engagement with the local community, which is a priority for us. "It also brings in much-needed funds, without events like this, the club would struggle to fund things like kit, coaching, maintenance and pitch repairs."

The Wiltshire Throwback Festival is expected to attract up to 3,000 people per day, with the line-up including Boney M's Liz Mitchell, So Solid Crew, and Tinchy Stryder. Nico Menghini, co-director of festival organisers Jarboom, said after the licensing application was approved: "We're ecstatic, especially considering the amount of work we've put in to satisfy the authorities. "We're already in the early planning stages for year two," he added.

Hyderabad: A GHMC road sweeping vehicle was gutted down in a fire incident at Saifabad on Saturday night.

The vehicle was on its routine task of sweeping the road stretch in front of the State Legislative Assembly when the driver notice fire in the vehicle. The driver jumped down and ran for safety. The fire spread rapidly gutting down the entire vehicle.

A fire tender from a nearby fire station reached the spot and doused the flames. The police are investigating.

'We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before,' Trump boasted. 'And we've gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel.'

The president then thanked the U.S.'s top military officials - saying that he hoped he would not have to order a strike on Iran again.

'This cannot continue. There will either be peace or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days,' he warned.

Prior to the Truth Social post, the president hasn't showed his hand, walking into the White House Saturday evening without speaking to reporters around 6 p.m.

The White House even called a 'lid' - which is when the press pool, which tracks the president's movements, is dismissed for the day.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that the president was giving himself two weeks to decide whether or not to attack Iran, with diplomatic options seemingly still on the table.

The Europeans had met with the Iranians on Friday in Geneva, Switzerland, but Trump had dismissed those talks.

'Iran doesn't want to speak to Europe. They want to speak to us. Europe is not going to be able to help them,' Trump said after landing in New Jersey on Friday.

Israel's bombing campaign had started a week before, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyanu warning that Iran was coming too close to making a nuclear bomb.

Trump joined in on that assessment Friday, telling reporters as he landed in Morristown, New Jersey that 'it looked like I'm right about the material they've gathered already.'

'It is a tremendous amount of material and I think within a matter of weeks or certainly within a matter of months they will be able to have a nuclear weapon and we can't let that happen,' Trump said.

He smacked down an assessment made by his Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard - a former Democrat - when she testified before Congress in March.

Gabbard had told lawmakers that the U.S. intelligence community 'continues to assess Iran is not building a nuclear weapon.'

She also said that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had 'not authorized a nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003.'

Trump told reporters when asked about Gabbard's statement: 'Well, then my intelligence community is wrong.'

Gabbard since clarified her comments.

'The dishonest media is intentionally taking my testimony out of context and spreading fake news as a way to manufacture division,' she posted to X on Friday. 'America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly.'

'President Trump has been clear that can’t happen, and I agree,' she said.

Sir Keir added that the US had taken action to 'alleviate that threat', having previously urged Trump to use diplomacy instead, warning that military action could cause wider ramifications.

Reports from the US suggested that the bombers flew direct from the US rather than using the joint UK/US base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

In a statement this morning Sir Keir said: 'Iran's nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security.

'Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat.

'The situation in the Middle East remains volatile and stability in the region is a priority.

'We call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.'

The dramatic series of events caught everyone off guard when Trump acted swiftly after meeting with his national security council at the White House.

Just 48 hours earlier, the president had said he would decide 'within two weeks' whether to send in U.S. bombers to help Israel destroy Iran's nuclear program.

After that statement the world let out the breath it had been collectively holding, and it seemed the immediate prospect of a strike had receded.

Trump's own MAGA movement had been tearing itself apart over the prospect of another Middle East war, and the president himself suggested there was still a chance for a diplomatic solution.

But all that changed very quickly as Trump became convinced that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would never voluntarily give up his quest for a nuclear bomb.

On Friday afternoon, Trump flew on Air Force One to a fundraising event at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Already, his mind appeared to be firming up and, speaking on the runway, he described two weeks as a 'maximum' deadline.

He was in constant communication with his advisers and came to rely on the judgment of four key people - Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and perhaps most crucially, Dan 'Razin' Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff - the man Trump credits with annihilating ISIS in his first term.

Ratcliffe and Caine, in particular, were briefing Trump on the intelligence of how close Iran was to getting a nuclear bomb - a matter of weeks - and the chances of military success if the commander in chief ordered a strike.

B-2 Stealth Bombers were used in the attack to drop bunker buster bombs

Officials have suggested that, even when Trump gave Iran two weeks, it was more in hope than belief that they wanted to talk.

Factors that increased the sense of urgency in recent days included Israeli intelligence that its bombing campaign had only set back Iran's nuclear program by a matter of months.

However, even as the need for a U.S. intervention became increasingly inevitable, Trump had several other concerns.

One was the brewing MAGA civil war, with some of his own most loyal supporters loudly reminding him that 'America First' meant not getting involved in wars.

Trump took steps to prepare the ground with his base, speaking personally to Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon, who had both forcefully expressed their opposition to strikes.

The president also had concerns about turning Iran into 'another Libya' after that country was thrown into chaos following the U.S. and NATO's bombing campaign to remove Muammar Gaddafi.

And there was the practical danger of launching a mission that failed to take out Fordow, which would leave Trump looking weak.

It had been widely speculated that two 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs - so-called 'bunker busters' - would be enough to destroy Fordow, an assessment backed by Israel..

But the bombs had never been tested in combat.

If they failed, the embarrassment would not be Israel's, it would be Trump's.

The military, through Caine, was able to give Trump a better option, hugely increasing the number of bunker busters used.

30 Tomahawk missiles were used in the attack

Another factor pushing Trump to give the green light sooner rather than later was the weather - it was a waning moon in Iran, giving cover for the B-2 bombers that would carry the bunker busters from a base in Missouri.

As Saturday dawned at his golf club in Bedminster, New jersey Trump and his officials went uncharacteristically dark.

Their social media posts were few and far between, and the president avoided his usual habit of speaking to groups of reporters.

Behind the scenes, the signals from Tehran were not positive.

Trump's officials were telling him that, whatever the Iranians said, they didn't really want to talk.

Bannon suggested cryptically that he was 'hearing from pretty good sources' that 'the party is on.'

In an attempt to placate Iran, U.S. officials reportedly contacted the regime on Saturday.

The message was that, should U.S. strikes on the nuclear sites happen, they would not be followed by an attempt at regime change.

At 4.30pm Trump helicoptered from Bedminster to Morristown Municipal Airport.

He waved and said 'Thank you' to the press but kept walking across the tarmac to Air Force One.

Trump did not interact with the press on the plane, or when he landed at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington.

His Marine One helicopter landed on the South Lawn of the White House at 6:01pm

Trump emerged and gestured to the newly installed American flag, gave a thumbs up and a fist-pump, but said nothing.

Two minutes later, he entering the White House and walked to the West Wing.

HIs silence led to increasingly fevered speculation that he had made up his mind to strike.

After reaching the West Wing he went to the Situation Room where his key team - including the four who had emerged as his top tier advisers on Iran - was waiting.

Also there, were his chief of staff Susie Wiles, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Vance sat to Trump's right, and Rubio to his left.

Israel was contacted to give a heads up that the attack was coming.

Trump decided to take one of the strongest options available to him, not just flattening Fordow.

He also gave the green light for 30 Tomahawk missiles to be fired from U.S. submarines to destroy other nuclear sites at Natanz and Isfahan.

The submarines struck from 400 miles away.

After reports came back to the Situation room that the mission had been a success, Trump called Benjamin Netanyahu to tell him. He also called Fox News host Sean Hannity.

He then announced the results on Truth Social and prepared a short address to the nation, which would last less than four minutes.

It included special recognition for the role of his top general, Caine.

For Trump, the military success of the operation will have come as a great relief, but he has also been briefed by Caine and Ratcliffe on what could happen next.

That could include Iranian drone attacks on the 40,000 U.S. military personnel in the Middle East, or Tehran could activate sleeper cells in America.

Trump made sure to warn Iran that, if it does, the consequences will be even worse.

The words he chose to emphasize on Truth Social were: 'NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!'

Given the mountainous nature of Fordow, it may be some time before before the full impact of the strikes is known.

But Netanyahu congratulated Trump on his 'bold decision.'

He said: 'History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime, the world's most dangerous weapons.'

Top U.S. military officials revealed the historic strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities utilized a massive deception effort, including the use of 'decoy' planes that allowed the actual bombers to go 'completely undetected.'

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine spoke to reporters in a rare early morning press briefing Sunday at the Pentagon.

'Our B-2s went in and out and back without the world knowing at all,' Hegseth said. It was one the most robust B-2 bomber strikes carried out in history.

'A large B-2 strike package comprised of bombers launched from the continental United States as part of a plan to maintain tactical surprise part of the package proceeded to the west and into the Pacific as a decoy, a deception effort known only to an extremely small number of climbers and key leaders here in Washington,' Caine said.

The chairman of the joint chiefs claimed no Iranian planes were deployed to intercept the bombers, and the planes used in the strike were not hit with any fire.

Caine said the mission was named 'Operation Midnight Hammer' and was meant to degrade the country's nuclear programs.

'Iran's nuclear ambitions have been obliterated,' Hegseth added, noting the operation was an 'incredible and overwhelming success.' It did not target Iranian troops or Iranian people, the defense secretary stressed.

The surprise attack on Saturday utilized seven B-2 stealth bombers that dropped 14 30,000-pound 'bunker buster' bombs on Iran's primary nuclear facility.

Over 125 U.S. aircraft participated in the mission, including bombers, fighters, and refueling tankers, Caine said. Approximately 75 precision-guided weapons were employed in the attacks, including Tomahawk missiles fired from submarines.

However, it is still unclear whether the strikes on the nuclear sites completely destroyed Iran's nuclear capabilities. Caine admitted that the operation 'severely damaged' the sites, but shared little more detail.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday in an evening address at the White House that U.S. strikes within Iran 'were a spectacular military success.'

Nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan were all hit, the president said.

The most difficult target was a secret uranium enrichment facility located deep underground in Fordow, approximately 80 miles south of Tehran.

U.S. submarines also fired 30 Tomahawk missiles and wiped out two other Iranian nuclear sites at Natanz and Isfahan.

Hours after the strikes, Iranian forces began lobbing missiles at Israel in a counterattack.

Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi called the U.S. offensive 'extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior.'

They might want to reconsider that after an incident involving Calvin, Gavin, Homer, and Summer Chester. The four arrived and reportedly became disruptive immediately.

They were allegedly interfering in the pool matches taking, even breaking one player's personal pool cue. A bartender closed Calvin Chester's tab and told the family to leave.

You can probably guess how that went considering a brawl broke out. According to the bartender, Calvin and Homer Chester started becoming aggressive toward him.

He called 911 before being chased outside by Gavin Chester. Police found a chaotic scene with several people injured and in need of medical attention when they arrived.

"Once the deputies arrived, there was kind of a chaotic scene, as there was quite a few witnesses and victims outside plus inside, several deputies were able to render aid to those that needed it and also tried to identify the suspects," said Stephen Jencks, captain of the Bay County Sheriff’s Office reports FOX 10.

According to the BCSO, all four of the Chesters aggressively hit several people during the altercation at the bar. Witnesses also report that they threw tables and chairs during the melee.

There were reports of injuries from bruises and abrasions to a chipped tooth, a nasal fracture and a swollen black eye. To add to the fun of the evening, two of the alleged victims were 65 or older.

The victims in the brawl were taken to the hospital while the four members of the Chester family were taken to the Bay County jail.

They face multiple charges, according to the sheriff's office. Here's a breakdown of the charges as laid out by FOX 10:

Summer Chester, 40, a Bay District Schools employee, was charged with aggravated battery of a person 65 or older, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, and introduction of a controlled substance into a detention facility.

Gavin Chester, 19, was charged with battery of a person 65 or older, and two counts of battery. Gavin Chester was also issued a summons for battery.

Homer Chester, 42, was charged with two counts of battery.

Calvin Chester, 39, was charged with one count of battery.

Hyderabad: Two sisters, both minor, died by suicide allegedly after being chided by their parents at their house in Balapur on Saturday.

The victims who were aged 17 and 15 years were natives of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, had migrated to the city along with their parents about a month ago and stayed in a rented house here.

As per information available, the elder sister had recently expressed her desire to marry a youth from the same neighbourhood, but her parents advised her to wait as she was still a minor. After this, both the girls reportedly had frequent arguments with their parents, with the latter chiding them over their rude behaviour.

Upset over the recent developments in the house, the minor girls are suspected to have hanged themselves from the iron grills to the window in the house with scarfs in the afternoon. Their parents, who returned from work in the evening, found them dead.

The Balapur police are investigating.

Hyderabad: NxtWave Institute of Advanced Technologies (NIAT), an initiative offering future-ready upskilling programmes to students enrolled in its collaborating universities, announced the conclusion of its ‘Build for Telangana Hackathon’.

TASK CEO Shrikant Sinha and IAS officer E Sai Shivani attended the two-day event that brought together over 600 students across 150 teams to develop tech solutions for public challenges. The ‘Build for Telangana Hackathon’, held in collaboration with the Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK), saw participants tackle real-world problems in public service, rural development and health.

This event further highlights NIAT’s significant impact in Telangana, where it has empowered over 55,000 students from 200 colleges since its MoU with the Telangana government in 2024, strengthening its commitment to fostering the state’s next generation of tech leaders.

With the theme ‘Using tech to solve for Telangana – public service, rural development, health, and more’, the hackathon concluded with an awards ceremony. Teams of Koushik and Akhila, Nikhil and Venu Gopal, and Murali Krishna and Avinash Gupta secured the top positions and the top ten teams were awarded a cumulative prize pool of Rs 3,00,000, along with mentorship, funding, and incubation opportunities.

Bhadohi (UP): A 22-year-old nurse was molested, beaten up and dragged by hair by an ambulance driver at a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi, police said on Saturday.

A case has been registered against the driver, identified as Rohit alias Mohit, who is absconding, they said.

On June 5, the nurse was on a call when Rohit came to her and started molesting her. When she protested, he grabbed her by her hair, started beating her, and threw her on the ground, Kotwali SHO Sachidanand Pandey said.

The accused also harassed the nurse by putting his hand inside her clothes and doing obscene acts, he said.

On hearing the nurse’s screams, doctors and other people present at the hospital came and saved her. They scolded Rohit and sent him away, the SHO said.

Rohit regularly comes to that hospital with patients, the SHO said, adding that efforts are on to arrest Rohit.

A case has been registered against him under sections 76 (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the BNS. According to police sources, both the nurse and the accused belong to the Dalit community.

Bengaluru: Before the horror of the tragic Air India crash that killed over 270 people could fade, another alarming incident came to light on Saturday as an IndiGo flight carrying 168 passengers issued a ‘Fuel Mayday’ call mid-air and made an emergency landing at the Bengaluru International Airport.

The incident took place on June 19 but has come to light only recently. When contacted, IndiGo spokesperson Rashmi stated to IANS on Saturday that no official statement has been issued regarding the matter. “The pilot issued a ‘Fuel Mayday’ as the flight was rerouted from Chennai to Bengaluru International Airport due to air traffic congestion (ATC),” she said.

The IndiGo spokesperson explained that it is standard procedure for pilots to declare a ‘Fuel Mayday’ when requesting an emergency landing due to low fuel levels.

Sources said that IndiGo flight 6E-6764 had taken off from Guwahati Airport and was bound for Chennai International Airport. However, due to traffic congestion, the flight was diverted to Bengaluru.

The incident occurred shortly after the crash of an Air India flight that had taken off from Ahmedabad and went down following a ‘Mayday’ call from the pilots has led to concern and panic among the passengers and crew on board the IndiGo flight, sources added.

The IndiGo aircraft, reportedly running critically low on fuel, managed to land safely at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Following the distress call, Air Traffic Control (ATC) was alerted, and emergency protocols were activated. Medical and fire response teams were deployed and stood by at the airport. The flight landed safely at 8.20 p.m., according to airport sources.

After the emergency landing, the aircraft later resumed its journey to Chennai with a different crew, sources confirmed.

New Delhi: State-run power giant National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) board on Saturday approved the proposal to raise up to Rs 18,000 crore through the issuance of NCDs or bonds on private placement in the domestic market.

The board of directors of the company in its meeting on Saturday also considered and approved the draft notice of postal ballot in respect of seeking approval of shareholders of the company for issue of these non-convertible debentures (NCDs), as per a regulatory filing.

The company also fixed the cut-off date of Friday for the purpose of reckoning the names of members, who are entitled for receiving postal ballot notice and voting rights, it said.

According to the filing, the board approved the issue of non-convertible debentures up to Rs 18,000 crore in one or more tranches/series not exceeding 12, through private placement in the domestic market during the period commencing from the date of passing of special resolution till completion of one year.

Hyderabad: It has been a fabulous journey from the ordinary to the centre stage of the inaugural GMR Rugby Premier League in Mumbai for Javed Hussain of Hyderabad Heroes, which has won all four matches to top the points table with 15 points.

With four tries and 20 points to his name, Javed has clearly emerged as the league’s best-performing Indian and is also ranked seventh overall in the ongoing league’s points tally.

“I am very happy with my team. We understand and support each other. We trust each other and are united as a team,” says Javed, player of the match against Mumbai Dreamers, in a chat with Telangana Today.

“When I played my first match, I was not sure how it would go. But everything changed after that first game and the first try I scored. When the match ended, my coach selected me as the Hero of the Day and gave me a jersey. I started crying when I got the jersey,” Javed explained.

Javed, who hails from a very humble background in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, has a peculiar story about how he got into a sport like rugby.

“We used to live in jhuggis (makeshift houses). There was a jungle behind, where we used to go to relieve ourselves since we didn’t have a bathroom. Slowly, an NGO (Earth Foundation) came, cleared the jungle, and made a ground,” he said.

Javed plays every match with his hand taped with ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ and a heart drawn on it. “When I used to play earlier, my family didn’t have much money, but my dad still used to support me the best he could. Despite everything, whatever I asked for, if they had the facilities, they would give it to me. I am very grateful to them,” a sentimental Javed said.

“The coaches from Delhi Hurricanes Rugby Club came in collaboration with the NGO and used to train kids there. I was standing there and watching as my friends played, but I didn’t understand the sport and was scared of the older kids, so I didn’t want to play,” Javed said.

“I started playing because the coaches told me they would give me a ‘Tiger’ biscuit packet after training. For those biscuits, I got greedy and started playing,” he said.

“I am here in the RPL for experience and exposure, not just for money. When I joined the league, I didn’t care about money or anything else. I just wanted to play with the people I used to watch on TV. I wanted to learn from them. It doesn’t matter if I play well or not. I just wanted to experience playing with and against them,” Javed said.

Javed is clearly enjoying the company of some illustrious names in the Heroes team, including Olympic medallists like Joji Nasova and Terio Tamani from Fiji, and global stars like his Spanish captain Manu Moreno. Sharing a locker room with them is the kind of exposure invaluable for a budding rugby player, especially under coach DJ Forbes, the former captain of the All Blacks Sevens team.

“I don’t have any pressure from my coach, and he is the best person I could train under. He knows my potential and strengths and directs me very well on the field. Even our captain Manu Moreno is very supportive. Whenever I make mistakes, he helps me a lot and he is very insightful,” Javed said.

New Delhi: India Cements Ltd (ICL), owned by the Aditya Birla group, on Saturday said it will sell its subsidiary Industrial Chemicals and Monomers to Mirai Sensing.

The board of the company has approved the sale with a consideration of Rs 97.68 crore, ICL said in a regulatory filing. “Upon completion of the said sale, ICML would cease to be a subsidiary,” ICL said.

The company shall enter into an agreement with Mirai Sensing Pvt Ltd, the proposed buyer, upon finalisation of terms, it said. It expects the sale to be completed within six months from the date of the agreement.

UltraTech, the country’s leading cement maker, in December last year acquired the promoter’s stake in the south-based cement maker. Consequently, ICL had become a subsidiary of UltraTech Cement with effect from December 24, 2024.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Nama said it was unjustified to arrest an elected representative who had been working tirelessly for public welfare, without issuing any prior notice.

The protestors also said even domestic connections were witnessing frequent outages. The farmers demanded that the Deputy Engineer visit the site and hear their grievances. Police rushed to the spot and persuaded the protestors to wait for four days while promising that the issue would be resolved.

Following the police assurance, the farmers withdrew their protest but warned they would launch a fresh agitation if the situation did not improve within the stipulated time.

Hyderabad: India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who began the five-Test series in England with a bang, cracking a brilliant century at Leeds on Friday, said they did a lot of preparation and batting, and got the ideas to understand each other before the tour began.

“We did a lot of preparation before coming here. It was a lot of fun to play, and it felt very good to bat. It was very good — I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot,” Jaiswal said in a chat with JioHotstar.

On his more experienced teammate, KL Rahul, Jaiswal said he was very experienced. “I can understand a lot by talking to him — where the runs can be made and how we can carry on the innings. It was a lot of fun to play with him,” he said.

“Rahul also came with India A. We did a lot of preparation and batting together, so we got a lot of ideas to understand each other,” Jaiswal said.

“I try to give myself more time to play my shots. I try to be mentally ready and aim to bat as long as possible. I try to create a good platform for the team,” he said.

“If I am set, I try to take it deep and play till the end. I keep telling myself to keep playing. Whatever happens, I will manage and always keep this mindset,” Jaiswal said.

Peddapalli: Parents of a youngster who slipped into a coma after attempting suicide allegedly due to police harassment staged a protest at Ambedkar Chowk in Manthani town on Saturday.

Demanding justice, the parents brought their unconscious son in an ambulance and were joined by relatives during the demonstration. The youth, who had earlier been booked by police in connection with a clash at a paddy procurement centre during the last Kharif season, reportedly attempted suicide following alleged police thrashing.

According to his father Devender, the case was registered based on a false complaint. “Not only was a case filed, but my son was also beaten up by police. Upset over the case, he attempted suicide and has been in a coma ever since,” he said.

Devender added that despite his son being bedridden, neither any action was taken against the alleged complainants nor compensation given for medical expenses. “The accused have been threatening us, and repeated visits to the police station yielded no result,” he said.

Frustrated by the inaction, the family decided to stage the protest. Police rushed to the spot, assured the family of justice and took them to the station. The protest led to traffic disruption for nearly an hour.

Man accused of forcing US congressman off road turns himself in

Ohio congressman Max Miller posted about the incident on social media on Thursday.

He alleged the man tried to show him a Palestinian flag, said "death to Israel" and that "he wanted to kill me and my family".

In a video shared on social media, Max Miller, a Republican house representative, said a man honked his horn and forced him "off the road" in an attempt to get his attention.

The driver was identified by the Rocky River Police Department on Friday as 36-year-old Feras Hamdan. He has pleaded not guilty to charges in relation the incident.

A man who allegedly threatened a US congressman with his vehicle in Ohio has turned himself in to the authorities, police have said.

Police said they put out a warrant for Mr Hamdan's arrest after the congressman filed a criminal complaint. They said Mr Hamdan turned himself shortly after.

The incident, which occurred in Rocky River, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, is now under investigation by state and federal authorities, including the US Capitol Police.

Mr Hamdan, who is reported to be a doctor in Ohio with a private practice, faces charges of aggravated menacing and ethnic intimidation.

He appeared in court on Friday, where his bond was set at $500,000 (£371,500) by Rocky River Municipal Court Judge Joseph Burke. He was ordered to surrender his passport and is due back in court on 8 July.

On Thursday afternoon, Miller posted a video on X describing the alleged incident, calling the driver "unhinged".

"The deranged hatred in this country has grown out of control," he wrote in the post.

Miller added that "as a Marine, a proud Jewish American and a staunch defender of Israel, I will not hide in the face of this blatant antisemitic violence".

The incident comes at the heels of a fatal attack on two Democratic state politicians in Minnesota and their spouses, an incident that has raised the alarm on political violence in the US.

State lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their homes on Saturday in what has been described as a "politically motivated assassination." Another lawmaker, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot but survived.

Police have arrested Vance Luther Boelter in connection to the Minnesota attacks, whom investigators say had a list of 70 "targets" that included names of other Democratic politicians.

President Donald Trump has also been the target of political violence, with two assassination attempts against him in 2024.

Their performance came half-way through a stunning two-hour show, that saw Lipa tear through hits like Physical, One Kiss, New Rules and Levitating. ”This is such a massive, massive milestone for me,” she told her 70,000 fans. “I've had a lump in my throat from the moment this show started.”

Some dedicated fans had camped out since Thursday to see the singer’s UK stadium debut, braving temperatures that exceeded 31C. “It means the absolute world to me that you're here tonight,” she told them during the show. “It feels like I've waited my whole life for this moment.”

Hyderabad: Former Minister and senior BRS leader T Harish Rao launched a broadside against Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, for allegedly striking a secret pact with his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu over the Banakacherla project.

He said Revanth Reddy’s statements on river water sharing were detrimental to Telangana’s long-term water needs and could cause irreversible damage to its rights.

He questioned the motive behind not convening an Apex Council meeting and instead opting for direct talks with Chandrababu Naidu.

“This appears to be a pre-fixed agreement. Is this your Gurudakshina for Chandrababu Naidu?” he asked Revanth Reddy.

In a strong counter to Revanth Reddy’s statements in Delhi on Friday, Harish Rao said the Chief Minister seems to have struck a secret deal with his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, disregarding the rightful claim of Telangana.

“Revanth Reddy offering to forego all the available water in both the rivers to Andhra Pradesh, in exchange for a mere 1,000 TMCft in Godavari River and another 500 TMCft from Krishna River, is nothing but a conspiracy to restrict Telangana’s rights over both the rivers,” he said.

The former Irrigation Minister reminded that former Chief Minister and BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao had demanded 1,950 TMCft from 3,000 TMCft of unutilised water discharged into the sea, in addition to 968 TMCft allocation from net available water. However, he said Revanth Reddy is planning to restrict Telangana to just 1,000 TMC ft in contrast to Chandrashekhar Rao’s demand for a total 2,918 TMCft to Telangana in Godavari River.

Harish Rao rubbished Revanth Reddy’s claim that Chandrashekhar Rao had agreed to only 299 TMCft of Krishna water, calling it a blatant lie. He reiterated that the BRS government had filed an affidavit before the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal seeking 763 TMCft and had been fighting for it with strong legal arguments.

He condemned the Chief Minister’s statements in this regard as factually incorrect and misleading. He felt sorry for Revanth Reddy’s lack of understanding the difference between final award by tribunal and adhoc agreement on Krishna River water sharing with Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad: All India Football Federation President Kalyan Chaubey said former India international Baichung Bhutia had access to an appropriate and empowered platform to express his views, raise concerns, and contribute constructively towards the development and performance of the Indian football team in the various AIFF Executive Committee meetings.

In a statement on Friday, the AIFF chief said that Bhutia, however, after his defeat in the September 2022 elections, had consistently and deliberately made baseless allegations and presented a distorted image of the AIFF.

“Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of the Federation but also throw Indian football into a negative light on international platforms,” Mr Chaubey said.

“The AIFF always remains open to constructive suggestions from Mr Bhutia for the growth and betterment of Indian football. However, it is unfortunate that in most Executive Committee meetings, his contributions have primarily centred around opposing decisions made collectively by the entire board, rather than offering substantial proposals,” the AIFF top official said.

“Having said that, I would like to inform Mr Bhutia is most welcome to participate in the upcoming AIFF Executive Committee meeting scheduled for July 2. The official invitation for his attendance was extended by the AIFF Secretariat on June 11, 2025,” Mr Chaubey said.

“Bhutia is encouraged to present any constructive proposals during the meeting, which will be duly deliberated upon by the entire Executive Board in the spirit of transparency, collaboration, and collective development of Indian football,” the AIFF chief concluded.

Kuching (Malaysia): India’s Velavan Senthilkumar signed off with a bronze medal after losing to second seed Alex Lau Tsz Kwan of Hong Kong in the men’s singles semifinal at the Asian Squash Championships here on Friday.

The Indian, ranked 45th in the men’s singles chart, went down 1-3 (9-11, 11-13, 11-5, 6-11) to the world number 41 Lau in a marathon 65-minute last four clash.

Both the losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze at the continental showpiece.

This was Senthilkumar’s second consecutive medal at the continental event. He had clinched a silver in the 2023 edition.

With his loss, India’s campaign also came to an end in the individual contest.

India’s teenage sensation Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh will be in contention in the doubles contest scheduled to begin next week.

Hyderabad: BRS student and youth leaders came down heavily on Congress leader Gajjela Kantham for making derogatory remarks and personal attacks against BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao and party working president KT Rama Rao. They condemned the deliberate smear campaign and vowed not to remain silent, if their leaders were insulted without evidence.

At a press conference in Telangana Bhavan on Friday, BRS Vidyarthi (BRSV) vice-president Thunga Balu warned that personal criticism in the name of politics will not be tolerated. He demanded Gajjela Kantham to withdraw his comments and apologise.

Hyderabad: The doctors at Apollo Clinics, Manikonda, are reporting that their general consultations for monsoon-related health issues have increased significantly, making it necessary for general public to take timely precautionary measures.

Senior general physician, Apollo Clinic, Manikonda, Dr Ahmad Ather Ali said that in the last week, the health facility has recorded an average of 10 patients per day with symptoms of monsoon-season illnesses.

“Compared to other seasons, we have noted a 60 percent increase in patients. Most of these conditions are treatable if addressed at an earlier stage, but delays in seeking care can lead to complications,” says Dr Ali.

The ailments that are being recorded include viral fever, flu, and common cold, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, acute gastroenteritis, dysentery, and typhoid, dengue fever, including instances with thrombocytopenia and acute febrile illnesses, with occasional Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

“Treatment is largely symptomatic, involving hydration, fever management, and supportive care. Sometimes, Antivirals are used, while antibiotics are prescribed only when necessary,” Dr Ali said.

The doctor has urged people to wear masks in crowds to reduce respiratory infections, drink enough fluids, avoid chilled beverages that may trigger common cold and maintain basic cough etiquette.

Hyderabad: A dummy helicopter used in film shootings, which was parked in an open ground, caught fire at Gurram Guda, Meerpet on Friday evening. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Police suspect mischief mongers could have negligently thrown a cigarette butt inside the dummy aircraft resulting in the fire.

As per available information, the dummy helicopter had been lying in mud and dust in the playground for a long time. It was abandoned at the spot after being last used by a film crew during shooting of movies.

Ever since then, it has been used by local youths and children as a playing spot.

“Children and youngsters from the nearby residential colonies come to the ground, sit inside the dummy helicopter and leave. We suspect that some miscreant might have lit a cigarette inside and threw the burning bud inside,” said a police official.

Though when the fire started was not clear, police said on noticing flames the local residents doused it immediately with the help of water from the nearby borewell.

On receiving information, the Meerpet police reached the spot and took up investigation.

Atlanta: Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, launched on June 13, 2025, is believed to have resulted in the deaths of at least 14 Iranian nuclear scientists. This military campaign, aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear ambitions and degrading its military infrastructure, marks a significant escalation in the long-standing shadow war between the two nations.

Among those killed were prominent figures like Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, a theoretical physicist and head of Iran’s Islamic Azad University, and Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, a former head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation.

The strategy behind targeting scientists is to undermine the continuity and institutional memory of Iran’s nuclear programme by removing individuals with critical technical knowledge. This tactic echoes the 2020 assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, often described as the mastermind of Iran’s nuclear efforts, whose death was widely attributed to Israeli intelligence.

This approach—deliberate attacks on scientists—has a long history, dating back to the dawn of the nuclear age. From 1944 to 2025, nearly 100 cases of scientist targeting have been recorded.

However, Israel’s current campaign stands out in both scale and openness. Unlike earlier covert operations, Israel publicly claimed responsibility for the assassinations, while also simultaneously launching attacks on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, air defence systems, and energy facilities.

Despite the visibility of these actions, academic research suggests limited success from such strategies in halting nuclear development. While assassinations can temporarily delay progress, they rarely eliminate a nuclear program altogether. In some cases, such acts may even fuel a state’s determination to pursue nuclear weapons and galvanize domestic support for retaliation.

Historical records compiled by political analysts show that four nations have targeted scientists working on nine separate nuclear programs. Israel and the United States have been the most active in this realm, though the UK and Soviet Union have also engaged in such actions.

Notably, scientists working for Iran, Iraq, and Egypt have been frequent targets. Before this latest Israeli campaign, ten Iranian nuclear scientists had already been assassinated since 2007.

The targeting has not always been limited to scientists within the country in question. For instance, in 1980, Mossad allegedly bombed the home of Italian engineer Mario Fiorelli, warning European firms involved in Iraq’s nuclear efforts. Such incidents illustrate that state-sponsored targeting can extend far beyond national borders.

While Israel’s campaign fits into this historical context, it is driven by contemporary geopolitical calculations. Since mid-2024, experts had been warning of a likely Israeli strike due to Iran’s expanding enrichment capabilities and the shifting power balance in the Middle East.

Israel had already weakened Iranian proxies Hamas and Hezbollah, dismantled air defences near Tehran, and benefited from the collapse of Syria’s Assad regime, which had been a key Iranian ally.

These developments left Iran isolated and militarily vulnerable. In this weakened state, Iranian leadership likely saw nuclear expansion—particularly enrichment beyond 60% uranium purity—as a strategic necessity.

This level of enrichment is just below the threshold needed for nuclear weapons. The international community became alarmed, especially after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) declared Iran to be in non-compliance with nuclear non-proliferation obligations. Iran responded by installing advanced centrifuge technology and expanding to a third enrichment site.

The nature of Israel’s recent targeting is also remarkable for its transparency and coordination. Rather than isolate assassinations from other military efforts, Israel has combined them with conventional airstrikes, making this one of the most integrated counter-proliferation campaigns in recent history.

While previous attacks relied on simple methods—such as car bombs or shootings—modern attacks have become more sophisticated. For example, Fereydoun Abbasi, who was killed in this operation, had previously survived a 2010 car bombing. The 2020 assassination of Fakhrizadeh used a remotely controlled machine gun, highlighting the technological evolution in these operations.

Rationale behind targeting scientists

In addition to military action, diplomacy, sanctions, cyberattacks, and intelligence operations form part of a broader non-proliferation strategy. The rationale behind targeting scientists is to impose delays, increase costs, and deter others from contributing to such programs.

Supporters argue this sends a strong message and hampers the adversary’s momentum. Israel’s military described its most recent attacks as delivering “a significant blow to the regime’s ability to acquire weapons of mass destruction.”

However, critics point out that Iran likely has thousands of scientists involved in its nuclear program. Eliminating a few—even prominent ones—may not significantly alter the country’s trajectory. Moreover, such assassinations raise ethical, legal, and humanitarian concerns, especially as scientists are generally considered civilians.

These actions risk elevating the victims to the status of martyrs, potentially strengthening public support for nuclear development.

While the targeting of nuclear scientists is not new, Israel’s latest approach marks a shift in both intensity and openness. Whether it will succeed in deterring Iran remains uncertain. Hyderabad: A man who allegedly tried to enter the military canteen wearing an Air Force T-shirt was caught by the security personnel on Friday.

As per available information, the youth is learnt to have allegedly convinced two young girls that he would provide them a job in the military canteen in the military college premise.

Initially, the security personnel at the gate reportedly did not stop the youth at the gate because he was wearing an Air Force T-shirt. However, they grew suspicious after he went to the canteen and was clicking pictures and videos of the premises.

They checked his identity and found he was not an Air Force staff and he was further handed over to the Trimulgherry police

The Trimulgherry police registered a case and are investigating.

UK could break hottest day record with 33C peak

The heatwave could peak on Saturday at a possible high of 34C, with thundery showers forecast for North Wales and northwest England, and dry and hot conditions in the east.

Health alerts have already been issued across England by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and will remain in place until 09:00 on Monday as it warns of health risks to the wider population.

Hot and dry conditions are expected to continue with the weather on track to reach the low 30s in many areas, but it could surpass Thursday's record of 32.2C, the Met Office said.

The UK is on track to break its record for the hottest day of the year for two days running with temperatures forecast to soar up to 33C on Friday.

According to the Met Office, by Friday afternoon many regions are also expected to pass the heatwave criteria - which means a temperature threshold is sustained for three consecutive days.

A heatwave could be declared in London on Friday where it has passed the threshold of 28C for two days in a row.

On Thursday, Suffolk became the first place in the UK to officially enter a heatwave after temperatures passed 27C for the third day in a row.

Some relief is forecast for Sunday, where the south and east will dip to the high 20s, while temperatures will cool to the mid 20s elsewhere.

Despite the record-breaking heat so far this year, temperatures are still below the June peak of 35.6C in 1976.

The heat that continues to build is due to an area of high pressure across the UK which draws in hot weather from other parts of Western Europe with windy conditions.

The UKHSA warned of "significant impacts" across health and social care services and a potential rise in deaths particularly among people with health conditions and those aged over 65.

Firefighters have also responded to more than 500 wildfires across England and Wales this year - a 717% surge on the same period in 2024, the National Fire Chiefs Council said.

They are urging the public to exercise caution when spending time outdoors in order to prevent further spikes.

Britons will sweat through 33C heat today with the UK expected to break its record for the warmest day of the year so far for the second consecutive day.

The mercury hit a 2025 high of 32.2C (90.0F) at Kew in West London yesterday after the Government placed the whole of England under an amber heat-health alert.

And thermometers could soar further today as the first official heatwave of the year continues with 33C (91F) forecast – while tomorrow could rise to 34C (93F).

Music fans arriving at the Isle of Wight Festival enjoyed the sunshine as they explored ways to keep cool, from umbrellas to paddling pools and gazebos to parasols.

Thousands of partygoers have descended on Seaclose Park in Newport for the four-day event being headlined by Sting, Stereophonics and Justin Timberlake.

Meanwhile other Brits struggled to sleep in the heat - with tonight and tomorrow not expected to fall below 20C (68F) in some areas, making it an official 'tropical night'.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued an amber heat-health alert yesterday for the first time since September 2023, which is in force until Monday morning.

The five-day alert which began yesterday warns 'significant impacts are likely' across health and social care services because of high temperatures, including a 'rise in deaths', particularly among those aged 65 and over or people with health conditions.

National Rail warned passengers that the weather may disrupt trains, given 'heat can cause overhead lines to expand and sag, lineside fires and also cause rails to buckle'.

Transport for London activated a hot weather plan and urged passengers to 'look out for each other while travelling' – while train drivers' union Aslef said 'spending your working shift in a small metal box deep underground is rarely a pleasant experience'.

Temperatures will reach the low 30Cs today and could hit 33C (91F) – with a number of areas expected to have passed the heatwave criteria by this afternoon.

An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three days in a row, with thresholds varying from 25C (77F) to 28C (82F) in different areas.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said: 'We're expecting the hot and dry conditions to continue. It does turn a little bit hazier in the west during the course of Friday.

From temperatures to sunshine, UK weather records for June The hottest June temperature recorded in the UK is 35.6C, which was reached in Mayflower Park in Southampton on June 28, 1976. The same temperature was also measured in Camden Square in North London on June 29 1957, according to Met Office data. The closest this record has come to being broken in recent years was in 2017, when 34.5C was reached at Heathrow in London on June 21. Last year, temperatures climbed as high as 30.5C at Wisley in Surrey on June 26. The 30C mark has been reached in June somewhere in the UK in eight of the past 10 years, the exceptions being 2016 and 2021. The highest temperature so far this month is 32.2C, which was provisionally measured at Kew in West London yesterday, the Met Office said. Forecasts suggest 30C will be topped again today and across the weekend, as the current hot spell continues. The average warmest June on record was in 2023, when the mean temperature for the UK across the month was 15.8C. This was almost a full degree higher than the previous record of 14.9C, which was set in both 1940 and 1976. 2023 was also the UK's fifth sunniest June on record, with an average of 245.0 hours of sunshine measured during the month. 'We're still expecting temperatures to reach the low 30Cs, 31C, 32C fairly widely, maybe seeing 33C.'

He added that increasing amounts of cloud will move in from the West tomorrow, with a chance of showers, some possibly thundery in North Wales and North West England, while eastern areas will see another dry and hot day.

Temperatures will be in the low 30Cs, and probably be the peak of the hot spell on Saturday, as 34C (93F) is possible.

However this is still below the June record of 35.6C in 1976 in Southampton.

The last time Britain reached 34C (93F) in June was almost six years ago on June 29, 2019 in London.

Before today, the warmest day of the year so far had been reached last Friday when temperatures got up to 29.4C (84.9F) at Santon Downham in Suffolk.

Mr Stroud said Sunday will be another very warm day in the south and east probably in the late 20Cs. Elsewhere it will be cooler, with highs in the mid-20Cs.

Temperatures are set to be in the mid-20Cs by the start of next week.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UKHSA, said: 'Our findings show that heat can result in serious health outcomes across the population, especially for older adults or those with pre-existing health conditions.

'It is therefore important to check on friends, family and neighbours who are more vulnerable and to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

'The forecasted high temperatures may also lead to an increasing demand for remote healthcare services and an impact on the ability of services delivered due to heat effects on the workforce.'

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation and pollen levels are also climbing alongside temperatures.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley warned that parts of the UK are in for 'tropical nights' this weekend.

He said: 'The nights will also be quite warm, with the possibility of temperatures not falling below 20C in some areas, making it hard to sleep. This is what we term a 'tropical night'.'.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive officer of the British Beer and Pub Association, said sales in some pubs increase almost 20 per cent during hot weather.

She said the current heatwave is a 'huge boon for Britain's brewers and pubs'.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) said that as of yesterday, 564 wildfire incidents have been responded to by English and Welsh fire and rescue services so far this year.

What is a heatwave? The Met Office defines a heatwave in the UK as three consecutive days where temperatures meet or exceed a specific threshold. These thresholds vary by region: 25C: Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, Wales and South West England

This is a 717 per cent increase on the same period in 2024, and more than double the number seen in 2022 which went on to be the worst year on record for wildfires.

The NFCC is now urging caution among members of the public when enjoying the outdoors in a bid to prevent further spikes in incidents.

As the drier weather continues and temperatures rise, there are also concerns that the UK will see more wildfires in areas where homes and businesses border rural areas, the NFCC added.

The public is also being urged to take care when in, on or around water.

Public safety advice issued by the NFCC includes avoiding the use of disposable barbecues in open countryside, parks, and moorland areas and not discarding cigarettes, matches, or glass bottles, as they can ignite dry vegetation.

With drier conditions during this time of year meaning that fires can burn into peat, and can burn for longer, it is likely some fires will take a number of days - rather than hours - to extinguish, causing more damage and placing further pressure on fire and rescue services, the NFCC added.

Across July 18 and 19 in 2022, the hottest days of that year, 84 wildfires were recorded, and 14 fire and rescue services declared major incidents, nine of which were linked to difficulties in responding due to the increase in operational demand, the NFCC said.

Meanwhile, a number of charities have issued warnings about the potential risks of hotter weather.

St John Ambulance urged the public to familiarise themselves with the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and to learn how to respond.

It comes after a survey of 1,002 adults in England revealed more than half do not know the difference between 'life-threatening' heatstroke, which requires a 999 call, and heat exhaustion, which can be treated by cooling and hydrating a patient.

The British Heart Foundation is encouraging people with heart conditions to take precautions such as staying cool and keeping hydrated to minimise potential health risks during a heatwave, saying the heat can put extra strain on the heart.

Age UK urged people to check in on older relatives, friends, and neighbours to see if they need anything and to make sure they are not feeling overwhelmed by the excessive heat.

Dementia UK issued advice and tips on how to support a loved one with dementia in the heat, including keeping hydrated; staying cool with appropriate clothing; keeping the person out of the heat; cooling the person down by avoiding hot drinks, alcohol and caffeine; and keeping the home environment cool.

RAC breakdown spokeswoman person Alice Simpson warned drivers should 'take every precaution' in the heat.

'When temperatures soar, vehicle breakdowns usually do the same,' she said. 'One of the biggest risks is an increase in cars overheating, especially when sat in queues of traffic with no shade.'

Ms Simpson urged drivers to check their coolant levels and any air conditioning systems that are not working properly, and to take plenty of water and snacks on the road.

People are urged to look after their pets in the heat as well.

British Veterinary Association president Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux said: 'Each summer, vets see pets suffering from heat-related problems and illnesses, such as heatstroke, breathing problems, burnt paw pads and sunburn, some of which can sadly be fatal.'

She said owners should ensure their animals have access to fresh drinking water, good ventilation and shade, advising dog lovers to avoid taking their pets for walks during the heat of the day and to never leave them inside a car, caravan or conservatory.

Tips from the RSPCA include using pet-safe sun cream; ensuring animals have constant access to shade and fresh drinking water at all times; and keeping fish tanks out of direct sunlight.

Others are using cold treats from the fridge for added moisture or make an ice lolly for dogs from pet-friendly ingredients; freezing dogs' water bowls; and wrapping an ice pack or frozen water bottle in a tea towel, or use damp towels for pets to lie on.

Posting to Reddit's Petty Revenge forum, the man detailed how the tables had turned spectacularly when he found himself in a position of power - and the former boss came crawling back.

'Back in 1997, my step-dad was the operations manager at a company that did telecommunications work,' the man wrote.

'He hired me to work at the company for the summer, but I ended up enjoying the work and made a career out of it.'

Just four months into the job, however, things took an unexpected turn when his stepfather was abruptly fired by the company's owner following a minor disagreement.

Despite this injustice, the original poster stayed on for another 18 months, citing his own frustrations with the company, including being underpaid and denied promised benefits, before moving on to a more promising role with a major telecommunications provider.

Eventually, he climbed the ranks and landed a position where he was in charge of hiring contractors - companies just like the one that had once employed him and his stepfather.

'One day I got a call out of the blue from the owner of the contractor company,' he wrote. The same man who had once sacked his stepfather now wanted to do business with him.

'I agreed to a lunch date with the owner at a fancy restaurant I always wanted to try,' he continued.

'I mentioned that I used to work for his company and he clearly didn't remember my name. I also asked if he remembered the guy who hired me, and he said he did.

'When I mentioned he was my step-dad, the look of panic in his eyes set in. He clearly remembered him.

'I closed out the lunch meeting with a thank you for the food and an apology that my contractor list was full of more capable contractors, but would keep him in mind if something were to change. I never heard back from him again.'

Hyderabad: Surgeons at Ankura Hospital, Banjara Hills have successfully carried out a minimally invasive procedure on a 32-year-old woman, who was suffering from a congenital medical condition known as Spina Bifida, which was causing bowel and bladder control problems.

The patient, a full-time working professional, who long depended on her parents to manage bowel evacuation, had consulted Ankura Hospitals. Following a comprehensive assessment, the hospital’s multidisciplinary team proposed the novel, minimally invasive procedure.

“Known as colonoscopic cecostomy, the procedure was technically demanding due to her previous abdominal surgeries. After a thorough review of available literature, we successfully placed a 14 Fr PEG tube into the cecum using colonoscopic access,” said Dr. Parijat Ram Tripathi, senior paediatric gastroenterologist, who performed the procedure.

Dr. VVS Chandrasekharam, Chief Surgeon, Paediatric Surgery and Paediatric Urology, said “This procedure is a significant step forward in addressing bowel management challenges in individuals with neurological disorders like Spina Bifida.”

Hyderabad: The England Men’s and India Men’s Test teams will honour Sir James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar with a new trophy dedicated to their remarkable achievements in Test cricket.

The next edition of this great rivalry takes place this summer, with the Rothesay five-match Test series getting underway at Headingley on Friday, June 20.

The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, a joint initiative between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will now represent all future Test series between England and India. Previously, the series in England was played for the Pataudi Trophy, and the series in India for the Anthony De Mello Trophy.

The Pataudi family will continue to be honoured, with a newly commissioned Pataudi Medal to be presented to the winning captain of each England–India Test series.

The trophy features imagery of Anderson and Tendulkar in action, along with their engraved signatures – a fitting tribute to two of the game’s most iconic figures.

Anderson, considered one of the finest exponents of swing bowling, took 704 Test wickets, the most by a fast bowler in the format. The Lancashire seamer ranks third on the all-time list, behind only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

Tendulkar, one of the most complete batters to have graced the game, remains the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15,921 runs. He made his debut at the age of 16 and went on to enjoy a distinguished 24-year international career, during which he played a pivotal role in India’s success against every other Test-playing nation.

Chennai: Actor Akkineni Nagarjuna, who plays one of the leads along with Dhanush and Rashmika Mandanna in director Sekhar Kammula’s eagerly awaited entertainer ‘Kuberaa’, has now disclosed that he plays a CBI officer in the film.

During a media interaction, the actor, who was asked about his character in the film, said, “I play a middle class person. I will be seen in the character of a CBI officer. My character finds itself in the midst of a conflict of whether to do good or bad.”

Stating that his character had many shades, Nagarjuna praised director Sekhar Kammula saying the director had written his character wonderfully well.

“It is a character that has a good scope for a subtle performance,” he said. Responding to another question on why he had chosen to do a multi-starrer, the acting ace said, “To come up with good stories, stars have to work together. I have done many films before. My father (ANR) NTR garu, Krishna garu, Shobhan Babu garu… all these people have done many films together.”

The actor also admitted that he had always wanted to work with director Sekhar Kammula.

“We all know about his films from the time he made ‘Anand’. I like his films a lot. His stories have a socially relevant elements,” he pointed out.

Commissioned on June 21, 2019, the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project has significantly expanded irrigation coverage, catalysing growth in agriculture, allied sectors, and rural employment in Telangana.

Hyderabad: Once criticised as overambitious and unviable, the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) emerged as a game-changer for Telangana’s rural economy. Commissioned on June 21, 2019, the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project significantly expanded irrigation coverage, catalysing growth in agriculture, allied sectors, and rural employment.

Telangana’s net irrigated area, which stood at 19.5 lakh acres in 2014, crossed 45 lakh acres by 2023, powered by the lifting of nearly 850 TMC of water through an extensive network of pump houses, tunnels, and canals. Key installations at Medigadda, Annaram, Sundilla, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Parvathi pumping stations delivered water to drought-prone zones in northern and central Telangana.

Districts such as Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Siddipet, Karimnagar, and Rajanna Sircilla saw a 60 per cent reduction in borewell dependency. Paddy acreage expanded rapidly, positioning Telangana as one of the top rice suppliers to the Food Corporation of India since 2021.

According to a 2023 Telangana State Planning Board report, rural household incomes in KLIP-covered districts rose by 25 per cent. Groundwater levels improved by 1.5 to 2.2 metres. In Karimnagar and Jagtial, horticulture income from crops such as mango, turmeric, and chilli doubled due to assured water supply.

The livestock and dairy sectors also witnessed parallel growth. Milk production rose by 38.81 per cent, from 4,207 thousand tonnes in 2014-15 to 5,840 thousand tonnes in 2023-24. Fish production surged as village tanks filled through KLIP-enabled widespread aquaculture.

In 2022-23, Telangana’s inland fish production reached 4,24,327 tonnes, while freshwater prawn production was 14,142 tonnes. In 2023-24, inland fish production increased by 3.58 per cent, totaling 4,39,513 tonnes. Freshwater prawn production saw more substantial growth of 16.9 per cent, rising to 16,532 tonnes.

While urban districts such as Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri continue to lead in income, rural districts narrowed the gap. Telangana’s per capita income rose from Rs 1.01 lakh in 2012-13 to Rs 3.47 lakh in 2023-24, well above the national average of Rs 1.83 lakh. All 33 districts reported higher PCI than the national average.

Unemployment also declined. In rural areas, joblessness fell from 65 per 1,000 people in 2017-18 to 28 in 2022-23. Seasonal migration from northern Telangana dropped by 40 per cent, aided by KLIP-driven employment in agriculture and allied sectors. Despite political criticism, KLIP remains a cornerstone of rural transformation, enabling not just irrigation but also livelihood, dignity, and economic stability across Telangana.

Technology giant Texas Instruments (TI) will invest more than $60bn (£44.74bn) in the US, as President Donald Trump pressures big computer chip makers to increase manufacturing in the country.

The company said it plans to build or expand seven chip-making facilities at three sites in Texas and Utah, and create 60,000 jobs. TI did not give a detailed timeline for the investment.

The Dallas-based firm described the move as the "largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US history."

It follows similar announcements from others manufacturing semiconductors, including Micron, which said last week that it would increase its planned spending in the US to $200bn.

New Delhi: After arriving safely in New Delhi on Thursday, all the 110 Indian citizens rescued from Iran by flight, thanked the Narendra Modi-led Union government as well as the Indian embassies in Iran and Armenia for evacuating them amid the escalating military conflict in the Middle East.

As part of Operation Sindhu, the first flight carrying 110 Indian citizens arrived in New Delhi after being successfully evacuated from Iran.

All the Indian nationals were flown to Delhi on IndiGo flight 6E 9487.

Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, welcomed the evacuated Indian citizens at the airport, IANS reported.

The flight carrying 110 Indian students from Urmia Medical University in Iran landed in New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport at Terminal-3.

After welcoming all 110 evacuated Indian citizens who arrived in New Delhi, Union MoS for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told IANS, “We have planes ready. We’ll be sending another plane today. We are evacuating some more people from Turkmenistan. Today, another plane will be going and our missions have opened a 24-hour helpline for any requests for evacuation. As the situation evolves, we’ll be sending more planes and more chartered flights to evacuate all Indian nationals from Iran…”

Several Indian students spoke to IANS after being evacuated from Iran amid escalating military conflict between Iran and Israel.

Expressing his emotions after arriving in New Delhi, an evacuated student told IANS, “The situation was extremely dangerous and we were scared. We saw drones, injured people and the internet was down, nothing was working… But the Indian government came through, took us in, and brought us home safely. Salute to them, they took an unbelievable step and we’re truly proud. We are Indians, and India got us out safely…”

Thanking Indian Embassy in Iran and Armenia as well as the Narendra Modi government, another evacuated student told IANS, “The situation in Iran is very bad. Two days ago, it was a bit better, but now it’s much worse… We are extremely thankful to the Indian government for the way we were evacuated and treated. I’m truly grateful to the Indian Embassy and the Indian government.”

Another evacuated student told IANS, “The situation there (in Iran) is definitely bad… the Indian Embassies in Iran and Armenia provided us with everything and prioritised our evacuation, bringing us back to India first..”

India has launched ‘Operation Sindhu’ to evacuate its nationals from Iran amid escalating regional tensions.

The first batch of 110 Indian citizens, including 90 students from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, arrived in New Delhi in the early hours of Thursday.

The evacuation was conducted via Armenia, with the students travelling by road to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, under the supervision of Indian missions in Iran and Armenia.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Wednesday evening that Indian students residing in Tehran were safely evacuated from the city through coordination by the Indian Embassy.

“Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for safety reasons through arrangements made by the Indian Embassy,” the Ministry said in their official statement.

The Indian students left Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan, Armenia, via a special flight at 14:55 IST on June 18, with their expected arrival in New Delhi during the early hours of June 19.

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced through Twitter, “Operation Sindhu begins. India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran. India evacuated 110 students from northern Iran who crossed into Armenia under the supervision of our Missions in Iran and Armenia on June 17.

This is part of the many steps that the Indian government has taken over the last several days for the safety and security of Indian nationals stuck in Iran and called for help in view of the deteriorating situation due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Indian government said that it is grateful to the governments of Iran and Armenia for the smooth facilitation of the evacuation process.

“India accords highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad. As part of the ongoing operation, the Indian Embassy in Iran has been assisting large numbers of Indian nationals in moving from areas seeing increased hostilities to relatively safer areas within the country and to subsequently evacuate them using the available and feasible options,” the MEA said.

The MEA advised Indian nationals in Iran to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tehran through its emergency helpline, and with the 24×7 Control Room established by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

The pilot of a small private jet that crash landed in southern California last month and killed everyone on board, including a famous drummer, clipped a power line during landing while flying too low a preliminary report has revealed.

The Cessna 550 Citation plummeted into San Diego's Murphy Canyon neighborhood in the early hours of May 22 as it made its final approach for Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.

Daniel Williams, a former drummer for metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada, and famed music producer Dave Shapiro - who is believed to have been the pilot - were among the six people killed in the crash.

Several factors contributed to the fatal crash, including the poor weather conditions that Shapiro was navigating during the descent, according to the National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report released Wednesday.

The airport's weather data system and a runway lighting system designed to guide pilots as they approach the runway were also inoperable, the NTSB report reviewed by the Daily Mail revealed.

Shapiro was flying below the minimum crossing altitude as he approached the airport. Roughly two miles away from the airport, he struck power transmission lines about 95 feet above the ground, slicing the tail of his plane and damaging the stabilizers.

The crash killed everyone aboard the jet and left eight people on the ground with minor injuries. The crash damaged one home and sent debris and jet fuel down the street, igniting 20 vehicles in flames, the report said.

The fatal plane crash comes amid a spate of aviation accidents including just last week when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed just minutes after take-off, killing all but one of 242 people on board.

The Cessna 550 Citation, with a tail number of N666DS, took off from Teterboro Airport at 11.15pm on May 21.

It stopped for fuel in Wichita, Kansas before continuing on to California, where it ultimately crashed in the quiet military neighborhood of Murphy Cnayon - just miles away from to its intended final destination of Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.

The pilot and all five passengers were killed. The NTSB's preliminary report does not specifically name the pilot and has yet to definitively conclude that pilot error was to blame.

It is believed that Shapiro, a licensed pilot and owner of the doomed Cessna, was flying.

The report, does however, recount the steps the pilot took as he began his approach for the private airport.

The pilot asked air traffic control if they could assist in determining weather conditions as he flew to San Diego.

The controller gave the pilot readings for an airport located four miles north, as well as conditions at other airfields in the area, but the pilot opted to keep heading for Montgomery-Gibbs.

He discussed 'alternate airport weather conditions' with the controller, in case he of a 'missed approach', and said he would notify officials of his alternate airport selection, but 'did not do so during the remainder of the flight,' the NTSB report said.

Air traffic control advised Shapiro that the airport's weather data system was out of service and the pilot confirmed he was aware, the report states.

Investigators last month attributed the issues to a power surge.

When the plane was about 10 miles northeast of a fixed approach point, the controller asked Shapiro if he was going to 'make your descent'.

The pilot replied 'I think we'll be alright' and declined vectors to the south from the controller.

Shapiro was cleared to use onboard navigation systems to guide his approach to the runway, rather than relying solely on ground-based radio navigation.

As he continued his descent, the pilot made a position call on the Montgomery-Gibbs common traffic advisory frequency stating he was three miles from the airport.

Officials then hear seven clicks of the microphone button, 'consistent with an attempt to activate the pilot-controlled runway lighting', the report states.

This suggests Shapiro tried to turn on the runway lights, which are different than the airport's inoperable runway alignment indicator lights.

As he made his approach towards the airfield, Shapiro dropped below the minimum crossing altitude.

He continued to fly lower until he struck the power line and crashed, the report states.

The runway alignment indicator lights at Montgomery airport had not worked for over three years, according to the NTSB.

'The repairs of the affected RAI lighting components and replacement of the light system have been delayed awaiting completion of an environmental study,' the preliminary report said.

'All other runway lighting was operable at the time of the accident.'

RAI lights serve as 'visual rails' for pilots during landing and are considered 'invaluable' during 'poor visibility conditions'.

Information about the status of the lights had been disclosed in a notice to airmen, which pilots are meant to review before a flight.

The pilot was also based at Montgomery Field, the NTSB report adds, though it does not indicate if he was aware of the status of the lighting system.

The preliminary report also does not indicate the cause of the crash. The final report could take up to two years to complete.

The jury has reached a verdict in the second murder trial of Karen Read, but over their several days of deliberations, they sent some questions to the judge.

In one, jurors asked: “If we find not guilty on two charges but can’t agree on one charge, is it a hung jury on all three charges, or just one charge?”

Judge Beverly Cannone — who said the defense at first wanted her to ignore the question entirely — indicated that would be premature. She decided, over the defense’s objections, to send jurors a note saying, “This is a theoretical question, not a question I can answer.”

Read has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

The last trial: After Read’s first trial ended with a hung jury, her defense attorneys claimed several jurors had come forward to say they had unanimously found Read not guilty of the murder and leaving the scene counts, and had deadlocked only on the charge of vehicular manslaughter.

President Yoweri Museveni has called on local leaders to conduct a detailed parish-by-parish assessment of households that have transitioned into the money economy under the Parish Development Model (PDM) programme.



The President emphasises the need to shift from rhetoric to results, urging leaders to walk closely with the people they serve.



He was on June 17, 2025, speaking to leaders of Greater Mpigi, comprising districts of Mpigi, Butambala and Gomba at Gombe Secondary School in Butambala.

“I want you to go parish by parish and find out exactly how many households have moved out of poverty. This is the real challenge now. We must stop operating on assumptions. The only way to measure success is to follow up and see the actual shift in people’s lives,” Museveni said during his second day of the PDM assessment tour in Greater Mpigi.

According to the President, it is not enough to roll out PDM funds, noting that what matters is how many families have actually changed their way of life by engaging in income-generating activities and joining Uganda’s formal economy.

“Our mission is not about distributing money. It is about transforming lives. The Parish Development Model is a tool to end poverty, but it requires close monitoring. You, the leaders, must go back to your people, track their progress, and report results. This is now a war for evidence,” Museveni said.





He likened the current task to the Biblical parable of the lost sheep.

“We must look for the households that are still stuck in poverty and bring them along. This is not a political campaign; it is a rescue mission for our people.”

He urged local leaders to get out of their offices and walk with the people on their journey of transformation.

“Get to the field, know your people by name, understand their struggles, and guide them step by step into the money economy,” the President said.

Process by process development

Museveni also cautioned leaders against promising to deliver everything at once, emphasising that development must be prioritised.

“When we talk about development, we must know that not all sectors can be addressed at the same time. Those who claim they can finish everything at once are liars,” he said.

Drawing a comparison to the 1960s, President Museveni praised the tremendous growth in education infrastructure under the NRM government.

“In 1961, when I joined Senior One, Uganda had only six Advanced Level schools: Budo, Kisubi, Ntare, Namagunga, Gayaza, and Nabbingo. But today, Mpigi District alone has 11 A’ Level government[-aided] schools, Gomba has six, and Butambala has 10. That’s a total of 27 A’ Level government schools in Greater Mpigi. This is a great achievement,” he said.





He urged leaders to do a better job of educating citizens about such national milestones.

“NRM leaders have a weakness of not teaching people about these achievements,” he added.

President Museveni further underscored the importance of preventive healthcare and personal responsibility in achieving national health.

“Gomba used to be just one district for this whole area. Now, we have more hospitals, immunization, safe water, and improved healthcare. Have you ever heard that Museveni is sick? I’ve been with you for 40 years. Most diseases are preventable,” he said.

“Girls as young as nine can be protected from cervical cancer through vaccination. Clean homes, clean water, and disciplined lifestyle. 80 per cent of diseases are preventable. I have been here with you, have you ever heard that Museveni is sick? I practice what I preach.”

The wealth and succession question

Turning to family wealth and succession, President Museveni warned Ugandans against dividing family property into small, non-productive plots after the death of a household head.

He proposed a more sustainable model based on structured inheritance and collective ownership.

“When the head of the family goes to heaven, don’t fragment the property. Work as a company, sell the produce, deduct expenses, and then share profits. That way, families stay united, and the land remains productive,” he advised.

He also cautioned that the traditional division of land often results in long-term family disputes and undermines generational wealth. Instead, he advocated for a shared-ownership system that mirrors models in developed economies.

The President underscored the need for irrigation and modern agricultural practices to maximise productivity.

He cited the example of Prof. Florence Muranga in Bushenyi, who increased banana yields tenfold from 5.3 to 53 tonnes per hectare through the use of irrigation and fertilizers.

“This is the transformation we want. We must use our land wisely,” President Museveni said.

President Museveni reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to skills training, promising to establish a Presidential Industrial Skilling Hub in Greater Mpigi.

On security, he questioned the lack of police canine units in Gomba to address rising thefts.

“I don’t know why there are no canine dogs here. I’ve directed the police to investigate this and deploy immediately,” he stated.

He also revealed government plans to work on the Mpigi– Nakawuka- Kasanje–Kisubi road, as part of broader infrastructure development.

Strong stance against evictions

President Museveni took a firm stand on land matters, vowing to protect bibanja tenants from illegal evictions by landlords.

“The Land Act is very clear. No one is allowed to evict a kibanja owner. If someone tells you to leave land you have been using, that’s abuse of your ignorance. It is illegal,” he said.

He announced that a new law would soon require tenants to pay obusulu (ground rent) through sub-county offices, denying landlords the ability to reject payments and use that to threaten evictions.

Tracing Uganda’s land woes to the colonial era, President Museveni explained that the Mailo land system emerged when British colonialists rewarded collaborators like Apollo Kagwa with large estates for helping subdue patriotic kings like Mwanga and Kabalega.

“These collaborators were given eight square miles each. That’s how the harassment of Ugandan land users began. We must correct this injustice,” the President said.

President Museveni also emphasized five pillars for national progress: peace, development, wealth creation, education, and health.

He said peace was the foundation that has enabled the construction of roads, schools, hospitals and industries.

“In 1986, Uganda’s budget was shillings five billion. Today, it’s shillings 72 trillion. But development takes time—even God took six days to create the world. You cannot expect everything to be done in one day,” he said.

President Museveni reminded Ugandans that while development is for all, poverty is personal and must be fought individually.

“You can have a tarmac road, but if you sit idle beside it, you’ll remain poor. Every household must take advantage of national development to improve their own livelihood,” he said.

He emphasised that the Four-Acre Model introduced by the NRM in 1996 remains the key to rural wealth, noting that it includes growing coffee, fruits, food crops, and pasture on small land, alongside poultry and piggery in the backyard.

He cited Serere’s Joseph Ijara, who started with 2.5 acres and now earns Shs 800 million in annual profits through poultry farming.



“This is what we mean by waking up. You too can do it,” he encouraged.



On his part, Alhajji Moses Kigongo, the First National Vice Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), made a stirring call for a return to the party’s founding values of discipline, humility and integrity.



Alhajji Kigongo also addressed what he described as a growing crisis of character among some NRM leaders.



“Our manners have deteriorated; we must go back to discipline. Respect the people. Treat the ordinary citizens with kindness. Explain to them what you have achieved, don't let your betray your progress,” he advised.



In a pointed critique, he warned that the corrupting influence of money had changed the moral compass of some members of the party.



“Let money not change you. Long ago, NRM leaders were known for good manners and discipline. Today, too many have become liars; the NRM used to be distinguished by its integrity. That must return,” he said.



Alhajji Kigongo also urged internal reconciliation and unity, calling for restraint in leadership contests.



“Why should six people be standing for one position in one party? Sit down, reconcile, and decide together. We need unity, not division,” he said.



The veteran leader reminded attendees that the strength of the NRM has always come from its principled foundation.



“Let us change our ways. The NRM stood and succeeded on discipline. That is what will carry us forward,” he concluded.



In an address delivered on behalf of the leaders of Greater Mpigi, the LC5 Chairman of Gomba district, Geoffrey Kiviiri, hailed President Yoweri Museveni for what he called a clear and deliberate effort to pull millions of Ugandans out of poverty and into the money economy.



Reading from a Memorandum of Understanding signed by leaders from Gomba, Mpigi, and Butambala, Kiviiri praised the President for introducing game-changing government initiatives, including the Parish Development Model, Youth Livelihood Program, NAADS, UWEP, and Emyooga.



“These programmes are not just policy on paper, they are the reason a mother in Gomba now owns a goat farm, why a youth in Butambala has a welding shop, and why a family in Mpigi is no longer surviving on subsistence alone. President, you have shifted the ground beneath our feet,” he said.



Kiviiri noted that across the region, which is home to more than 672,000 people, 65% of the population has now joined the money economy.



“There’s a visible difference; our people are no longer trapped in that cycle of poverty. They are working, saving, producing and they have entered a new era,” he said.



He pointed to the Parish Development Model as a standout success, saying that in just three years, billions of shillings have flowed into the region, channelled through community SACCOs: 49 in Gomba, 25 in Butambala, and 56 in Mpigi.



Kiviiri confirmed that all the funds allocated for this financial year had already been received.



“We are close to achieving 100% household coverage. This money has not only arrived, it’s working. It’s building businesses. It’s restoring dignity,” he said.



However, he did express concern over the performance of the Emyooga funds, admitting that the impact has not matched that of PDM.



“Let us remember, this money is not to be eaten, It is to initiate projects that generate wealth and should be returned after two years so others can benefit. That is how we create a cycle of progress,” Mr. Kiviiri warned.



Beyond economic reform, Kiviiri applauded the President for investments in critical infrastructure.



He also lauded the Presidential Industrial Hubs, calling them a light for the youth who had fallen through the cracks. According to Kiviiri, 243 young people from the region have so far graduated from the Industrial Hub with practical vocational skills.



“These are children who dropped out of school, who had been written off. Now they are carpenters, tailors and electricians. They are useful to their country. That is the President’s legacy,” he said.



Also in attendance were finance minister Matia Kasaija, lands minister Judith Nabakooba, privatisation state minister Evelyne Anite, NRM deputy secretary general Rose Namayanja, local leaders, and religious leaders, among others.

The President emphasises the need to shift from rhetoric to results, urging leaders to walk closely with the people they serve.

A flare-up over illegal grazing in Maruzi Ranch has left 11 gardens destroyed and several cattle injured, triggering the intervention of local leaders and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to defuse growing tensions between migrant cattle herders aka Balaalo and local farmers.



The incident comes amid renewed government pressure to enforce President Yoweri Museveni’s 2023 directive ordering the eviction of non-compliant Balaalo from northern Uganda, particularly those occupying public land without fencing of water sources.



In the latest case, cattle belonging to Nzarubara were found grazing unlawfully inside Maruzi Ranch, damaging gardens in Abongker Village, Tarugali Parish, Ibuje sub-county in Apac district.



According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the army fifth division spokesperson Capt. Edrin Mawanda, the tense standoff was swiftly stabilised after a joint leadership team visited the area.



The team comprising the Apac Resident District Commissioner (RDC), the commanding officer of the 103 Battalion, Ibuje LC3 chairperson, Ibuje sub-county chief and the police assessed the extent of the destruction caused by the grazing cattle.



During their visit, it was discovered that three of the cows had sustained panga cuts on their tails allegedly inflicted by angry farmers retaliating for the destruction of their crops.



To ease tensions, the parties reached a compromise: The affected farmers agreed to accept half of the compensation initially demanded, in recognition that they had also taken matters into their own hands.



Additionally, the 37 impounded cattle were relocated across the Kungu Ferry to the far side of Masindi Port, removing the immediate source of conflict.



The UPDF has since deployed a contingent in the area to maintain peace and prevent further flare-ups.



"The UPDF remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all Ugandans," Capt. Mawanda affirmed.



Museveni’s crackdown



The Maruzi Ranch incident is only the latest in a broader national campaign to regulate illegal grazing and restore order in northern Uganda.



In May 2023, President Museveni issued Executive Order No. 3, targeting a range of issues affecting the region, including commercial charcoal production, cattle rustling, and the unlawful presence of Balaalo herders.



Under the order, Balaalo without fenced land and independent water sources in Acholi, Lango, Teso, and West Nile sub-regions were directed to vacate within three weeks, or face eviction.



This directive also applied to those occupying government ranches such as Aswa and Maruzi without authorisation. Balaalo who could prove legal land ownership, proper fencing and water access were allowed to remain temporarily pending further scrutiny.



Enforcement intensified in November 2023, when the President, through a letter to the Prime Minister, gave Balaalo a two-month ultimatum to comply or face imprisonment and cattle confiscation.



The directive was reiterated again in May 2025 by state minister Dr Kenneth Omona, who issued a two-week notice to all remaining Balaalo to vacate. He warned that failure to submit valid cattle movement permits would result in forceful eviction, supported by UPDF deployment at key points like Karuma Bridge.



Why the crackdown?



Government officials cited several reasons:



Protecting farmers: Balaalo cattle had repeatedly damaged local farms, triggering community outrage and loss of livelihood.



Upholding order: The President accused the Balaalo of being “indisciplined” and sometimes armed, undermining social harmony.



Environmental control: The order was part of a broader push to curb deforestation, cattle theft, and unlawful land use.



To enforce the directive, a multi-agency task force was formed, including security officials, RDCs, police, and veterinary officers. Initial evictions began in December 2023, but were temporarily paused due to an outbreak of livestock disease. Operations resumed in May 2025, focusing on herders without proper documentation.



A national priority



President Museveni's executive order reflects a sustained national strategy to restore land integrity, protect farming communities, and regulate nomadic grazing practices.



With the UPDF actively supporting civilian authorities on the ground, the government has reaffirmed its resolve to end the long-running conflicts associated with unregulated cattle herding in the north.

Recent research initiatives on alternative therapies for sickle cell disease at Gulu University have attracted considerable attention, leading to over 20 patients seeking herbal treatments provided by university researchers.



Dr Alice Veronica Lamwaka, a clinical pharmacist and principal investigator of the project titled "Exploring Traditional Plant-Based Remedies for Sickle Cell Conditions and Complications in Northern Uganda," reported attending to these patients in just two days, many of whom travelled from different regions after learning of her involvement in the summit through media coverage.



This was on Monday, June 16, 2025, during the first National Science Summit, part of the National Science week 2025, organised by the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation-Office of the President in partnership with Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and Busitema University. The event is being held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala city.



Lamwaka highlighted the socioeconomic challenges faced by many patients, stating that conventional treatments like hydroxyurea, priced between shillings 2,000 and 3,000, are financially burdensome for low-income families already dealing with the ongoing costs of managing sickle cell disease.



During an interview, Lamwaka noted a significant turnout at the Gulu University booth, where numerous individuals inquired about access to herbal treatments for themselves or their children.



One patient, who asked to remain anonymous, recounted leaving her job as a social worker due to debilitating pain, expressing desperation for viable remedies given her failed attempts with modern medical treatments.



The research at Gulu University is focused on the systematic evaluation of various indigenous plants traditionally recognised for their potential in alleviating symptoms associated with sickle cell disease.



The objective is to isolate and identify the 10 most prevalent plants for further standardisation and formulation into effective therapeutic agents.



On October 19, 2024, the Government endorsed this research initiative, allocating shillings 330 million through the Science, Technology, and Innovation programme.



However, Lamwaka emphasized that this funding is insufficient, with a comprehensive budget in need of billions of shillings for the project’s completion, targeted for November 2026.



Current statistics from the health ministry indicate that the sickle cell prevalence in the Acholi region is approximately 13.3%, with a distressing statistic of 33,000 infants being born with sickle cell disease, 80% of whom do not survive past their fifth birthday.



In response to these alarming figures, Gulu University has established a living gene bank to cultivate plants that can be employed in the development of potential remedies.



Lamwaka acknowledged that while the herbal treatments are still in the research and development phase, select patients in critical conditions have begun to receive them in natural formulations.



Reports from individuals such as Elon Agumemwe from Kampala indicate stabilizing health conditions after two months of using these herbal remedies.



Additionally, Lamwaka has received numerous inquiries from sickle cell patients across East and West Africa, who have learned about the potential of these herbal products through various media channels.



On the same day, science minister Dr Monica Musenero launched a clinical trial report detailing the safety, pharmacokinetics, and preliminary efficacy of herbal products for treating acute respiratory viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, as part of the phase 2a open-label clinical trial.



During the launch, Musenero reaffirmed the commitment of researchers to develop herbal solutions addressing an array of health challenges while advising them to safeguard their intellectual property through copyright measures to prevent potential intellectual theft.



She also urged adherence to national and international health regulations governing the pharmaceutical development process, ensuring the integrity and efficacy of medicinal products.

Lamwaka acknowledged that while the herbal treatments are still in the research and development phase, select patients in critical conditions have begun to receive them in natural formulations.

Sickle cell patients seek herbal remedies during science summit

China's J-35A stealth fighter jet, a new type of combat aircraft, made its international debut at the 55th Paris Air Show. A large model of the J-35A is prominently displayed at the Aviation Industry Corp of China booth at the international air show, which opened on Monday.

AVIC, the nation's primary aircraft maker, describes the J-35A as a single-seater, twin-engine stealth multirole combat aircraft, featuring domestically developed technologies and a conventional aerodynamic configuration.

Its main role is to achieve and maintain air superiority for the People's Liberation Army Air Force, with a secondary mission of conducting air strikes on land and sea targets. The J-35A is designed to engage hostile aircraft, including fighters and bombers, intercept enemy cruise missiles, and neutralize adversaries' land and ship-based air defense systems, according to an AVIC statement.

Zhu Qian, a senior executive at AVIC, told China Daily on Monday that the J-35A's display aims to showcase the Chinese aviation industry's innovation, technological achievements, and commitment to cooperation and mutual benefit.

"Compared with older types like those in the J-10 family, the J-35A is characterized by its stealth capability because low-observable operations are an inevitable element in future air battles. This is why it looks very different from the J-10 series," Zhu said. "In addition, the aircraft has better situational awareness capacity and joint combat capability."

Zhu did not directly answer a question about the potential of the export of a version of the J-35A, but he highlighted increasing numbers of foreign buyers and potential customers in Chinese aviation products.

"We always uphold the principles of safeguarding world peace and no engagement in regional conflicts. We strictly observe the obligations under relevant international laws and China's laws and regulations governing the export of military products," he stated. "Through legitimate arms trade cooperation, we assist friendly countries in establishing self-reliant defense systems. With a client-oriented philosophy, we are committed to providing advanced and reliable aviation hardware to friendly countries around the world, playing a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability."

Wang Yanan, chief editor of China's Aerospace Knowledge magazine, believes the time has come for AVIC to develop an export version of the J-35A.

"China owns all technologies used on the J-35A, which means we have total control over the combat plane. In addition, we now have developed next-generation aircraft that will be better than the J-35A, and that means it is safe for us to sell it on the international market," he said.

Wang explained that numerous countries are attempting to develop fifth-generation fighter jets but are limited by their technological and manufacturing capabilities and therefore often resort to modifying fourth-generation jets with some stealth technologies, an approach that has proven to be expensive and time-consuming.

"So our J-35A is a realistic option to those seeking fifth-generation fighter jet on the international market. It incorporates China's experience and expertise in combat aircraft and also represents some of the world's best technologies available on the global market," Wang said, adding that Pakistan and some Middle Eastern countries were likely to be interested.

Wang Yongqing, the J-35A's chief researcher at the AVIC Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, stated that the radar-evading combat plane was created to serve as the backbone of the PLA Air Force's efforts to neutralize high-level threats, particularly those presented by hostile stealth aircraft.
